Smiley Flowers, also referred to asSpecial Flowers,[1]Flower Men,[2] or simplyflowers,[3][4][5] are plantitems first appearing inSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Their role is comparable toDragon Coins andStar Coins. There are also evil smirking versions known asFooly Flowers that attempt to trick aYoshi into coming near them. After that, they roll into them.
History[edit]
Yoshi's Island series[edit]
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island /Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]
Special Flowers are items inSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island andits reissue. There are five Special Flowers in each level, and collecting them all earns theYoshi anextra life and 50 points toward the completion score (10 points per flower). Getting all the flowers in each level is also necessary for the Yoshi to get a perfect score. Collecting at least one flower is also necessary to access aBonus Challenge via theGoal Ring, and the chance of playing a Bonus Challenge is increased by collecting more. Flowers normally bloom as soon as they come onscreen, but they remain as sleeping seeds if frozen or not collected at the end of a level.
Yoshi's Island DS[edit]
Flowers are items inYoshi's Island DS. They function the same way as in the game's predecessor.
Yoshi's New Island[edit]
Smiley Flowers are items inYoshi's New Island under their current name, functioning the same way as in the game's predecessor. However, as there are no score features or Bonus Challenges in this title, collecting all five increases the chances of gettingEgg Medals via the Goal Ring.
Mario Kart series[edit]
Mario Kart: Double Dash!![edit]
InMario Kart: Double Dash!!, Flowers appear at the back and asemblems on theGoo-Goo Buggy and theRattle Buggy.
Mario Kart Tour[edit]
InMario Kart Tour, due to the Goo-Goo Buggy's return, the Smiley Flower emblem on it also appears too, though it is now only found at the back of the kart. A glider named theSmiley Flower Glider based on a Smiley Flower also appears, starting with the2023 Yoshi Tour.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]
InMario Kart 8 Deluxe, Smiley Flowers appear at theGoal Ring at the end ofYoshi's Island in theBooster Course Pass DLC pack.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
Two flowers with open mouths appear in the foreground of the summer transition of theYoshi's Island stage, first appearing inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl and later appearing inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Yoshi's Woolly World /Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]
Smiley Flowers reappear inYoshi's Woolly World andPoochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, acting the same as in previous games. However, collecting all five does not give players an extra life because the game does not have lives. If Yoshi collects all Smiley Flowers from non-special courses in a world, a special course is unlocked in that world. If all Smiley Flowers are collected from all other courses, theBig Yarn Ball onCraft Island becomes the courseWonderful World of Wool. InYoshi's Woolly World, collecting a Smiley Flower at theGoal Ring has Yoshi play aBonus Game for extrabeads. InPoochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, the same event instead enables the player to toggle Gold Rush mode in thePoochy Dash mode for one course. This still lets the player collect more beads, just in a different game.
Yoshi's Crafted World[edit]
Smiley Flowers return inYoshi's Crafted World, and like inYoshi's Woolly World, they do not grant extra lives due to the lack of the extra life system. The player also earns additional Smiley Flowers in a level for collecting a set number of coins, collecting allRed Coins, getting full hearts, finding thePoochy Pups, finding them within a set time, and finding all of the souvenirs. In levels such asGo-Go Yoshi andMonty-Mole-B-Gone, Smiley Flowers can also be obtained by completing various objectives. Yoshi must also giveBlockafellers andTorques certain numbers of Smiley Flowers to advance to certain levels. Unlike previous games, they do not give the player a chance to play a Bonus Game. Unlike previous games, there are varying amounts of Smiley Flowers per level (between 5 and 8). Fooly Flowers also make a reappearance. In this game, they disappear when hit.
Super Mario RPG (Nintendo Switch)[edit]
In theNintendo Switch remake ofSuper Mario RPG, several Smiley Flowers can be seen on the level-up screen.
Other appearances[edit]
The Wii U version ofSonic Lost World received a DLC level titledYoshi's Island Zone; it contains manyYoshi franchise references. Among these are theRed Star Rings fromSonic Lost World being replaced by Special Flowers.
