APutrid Piranha is a poisonousPiranha Plant variant found in thePaper Mario series. They are primarily featured in Chapter 5.
Design
InPaper Mario, Putrid Piranhas resemble larger variants of their standard counterparts, being colored red with white spots and having yellow-stained teeth and a large, lolling tongue. They resemble the Piranha Plants fromSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, fitting with the other references to the game on the island.
InPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door andSuper Paper Mario, they are redesigned to be the same size as their standard counterparts and are now colored yellow with red spots while also having purple teeth, green lips, and a blue tongue.

Paper Mario
InPaper Mario, Putrid Piranhas are found onLavalava Island. They are first encountered as mini-bosses inJade Jungle, where a pair is attacking the orangeYoshi who is part of theFearsome 5, and they later appear as common enemies inMt. Lavalava itself, where they serve as minions of theLava Piranha. TheFrost Piranha, which appears later inShiver Snowfield, is an icy relative of the Putrid Piranha.
In battle, Putrid Piranhas can not only biteMario, but they are also able to breathe a cloud of poisonous breath on him, this attack doing two points of damage andpoisoning him if he fails to block it. Unlike their regular variant inForever Forest, they can safely be jumped on without theSpike Shield badge due to their heads facing forwards.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Putrid Piranhas reappear inPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and itsNintendo Switch remake, where they can be found onKeelhaul Key as uncommon enemies. Unlike their previous appearance, they now stand upright, making them impossible to jump on normally unless Mario has the Spike Shield badge equipped, and are exclusively found in jungles.
Super Paper Mario
InSuper Paper Mario, Putrid Piranhas live in theLand of the Cragnons, where they will emerge from pipes and attempt to attack with their poisonous breath. While they are exhaling their poisonous gas, Mario can damage them by jumping on their exposed head. They have a high chance of dropping items, especiallyHorsetails, due to the poison status being very deadly if Mario has no items. Uniquely to this game, it is mentioned in their Tattle description that the Putrid Piranhas' poisonous nature is rumored to be a result of pollution, possibly serving as an early hint to the problem of theCragnons' littering and explaining why the poisonous plants have come to reside in the Cragnons' land.
Super Mario-kun
Putrid Piranhas appear in volume 26 ofSuper Mario-kun. When aWhite Magikoopa ambushesMario and his partners in Lavalava Island, he uses Putrid Piranha plants. They bite Mario's head and let out a bad breath, poisoning Mario andGoombario. TheFearsome 5, however, comes to the rescue and attack the White Magikoopa while sealing the Putrid Piranhas' mouth with tape. One of the Yoshis then defeats the White Magikoopa by using aThunder Rage on him.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, Piranha Plant turns into a Putrid Piranha during itsPoison Breath move, and spits poisonous gas to damage other fighters. It is also mentioned briefly byViridi duringPalutena's Guidance dialogue for Piranha Plant.
