Mace Guys are rare enemies within theYoshi's Island series. They appear as a rare variant of aShy Guy, wielding and swinging aBall 'N' Chain so as to damageYoshi. However, Yoshi is able to eat the Shy Guy, spitting it out to turn it into a regular Shy Guy. This may also happen if one is frozen with anice watermelon. Despite their name, the weapon they wield is in fact a flail rather than a mace. Additionally, while the artwork depicts the flail as black with white spikes, the sprite depicts it as light blue with yellow spikes.
Mace Guys first appear inSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, where they appear in only three levels:Sluggy The Unshaven's Fort,Raphael The Raven's Castle, andUltimate Castle Challenge. They return for one secret level inYoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3:Endless World of Yoshis. They reappear once more inYoshi's New Island.
Yoshi Topsy-Turvy features Mace Guys in a total of seven missions. All but one are in the sixth chapter, and a lone one is found in the fifth chapter.
A Mace Guy also appears as asticker inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl. The sticker increases the strength of a fighter's weapon by twenty-two points.
Shy Guy appears as a Mace Guy during itsSpecial Shot Spin Strike inMario Golf: Super Rush. Its flail is black with white spikes for the first time sinceYoshi's Topsy Turvy, but with a more proper handle. The game also marks the debut of blue, yellow, green, pink, light-blue and orange Mace Guys, which are seen after unlocking the Shy Guys' alternate colors from Ranked Matches.

Yoshi's New Island
- Shogakukan guide: 回転しながら鎖のついた鉄球を振り回す。食べるときは、鉄球の射程が短くなったときに近づくとよい。安全策をとるなら、遠距離からタマゴを投げて倒そう。[4] (It swings a chained iron ball while spinning. To eat it, approach it when the range of the ball is shortened. If you want to play it safe, throw an egg at it from a long distance to defeat it.)

- Shogakukan guide: 鎖のついた鉄球を振り回すヘイホー。倒し方は通常のヘイホーと変わらない。また、鉄球を振り回すスピードは、コースによって異なる。[5] (A Shy Guy wielding a chained iron ball. The method of defeating them is the same as that of regular Shy Guy. Additionally, the speed at which the ball is swung depends on the course.)
