Lanterns (also referred to astorches[1][2][3][4] orcandlesticks[5]) are recurring objects in the 3DSuper Mario games. Lighting lanterns withfireballs can open pathways or make collectible items appear. Their function is shared with theTorches in the seriesThe Legend of Zelda, something that is lampshaded inWorld 5-2 ofSuper Mario 3D Land.
In nearly all appearances, the player character lights lanterns in theirFire form.Levels that feature lanterns almost always includeFire Flowers. Like withlava and other forms of fire, touching a lantern's flame burns the character, even if they were the one who lit it.
History
Yoshi's Island DS
Torches inYoshi's Island DS are found along the walls of various courses. Yoshi can eat a lit torch which allows him to blow fire three times. The fire can be used to light unlit torches, further lighting up the room. When Yoshi hasBaby Bowser on his back, he can use Baby Bowser's fire-breathing ability to light the torches.
Super Paper Mario
Torches[1] are introduced late intoSuper Paper Mario, found along the walls ofUnderwhere Road.Bowser can light one to temporarily remove the darkness from obscuring the area. A set of white torches are also found withinCastle Bleck, and must be lit in a pattern matching torches from another area to reveal a staircase. Torches will extinguish after a set amount of time and do not harm the player character in this game.
Super Mario series
Super Mario Galaxy /Super Mario Galaxy 2

Torches[2] return inSuper Mario Galaxy. They typically bear red flames, but in some ghost-themedgalaxies, their flames are blue. In missions featuring the Fire Flower, lighting all of the torches in an area triggers a nearby event, such as in the opening of a stone gate inThe Underground Ghost Ship. Torches otherwise can be encountered already lit. The flames can be put out by aspin, typically giving acoin afterward. They have the same function inSuper Mario Galaxy 2.
Super Mario 3D Land
InSuper Mario 3D Land, lighting torches usually reveals coins. Exclusively inWorld 5-2, lighting all four of the torches in one specific area causes the "Puzzle Solved Jingle" from the seriesThe Legend of Zelda to play while a door that leads to the level's secondStar Medal opens.
Super Mario 3D World /Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
InSuper Mario 3D World andits port, lighting torches[4] can brighten up dark areas such as inSwitchblack Ruins, and revealGreen Stars as seen inPiranha Creeper Creek after Dark, where every torch in each room must be lit to get them.
Super Mario Odyssey
Lanterns appear in nearly every kingdom inSuper Mario Odyssey, exhibiting designs that compliment the visited area's culture and geography. Typically, lanterns are always lit. They can be extinguished with aCap Throw, by striking them with acaptured Pokio's beak, or withYoshi's tongue. A lantern often releases a coin or aLife-Up Heart when its flame is put out. InShiveria, four candlesticks encircle the entrance toSnowline Circuit. One becomes lit whenMario clears abarrier. When all are lit, the entrance becomes accessible. Lanterns are the only source of light aroundPitchblack Mountain inNew Donk City.
In theLuncheon Kingdom, lightingspecific lanterns awards MarioPower Moons. Traditionalpower-ups do not appear inSuper Mario Odyssey, so in lieu of Fire Flowers, Mario must captureFire Bros,Fire Piranha Plants, andLava Bubbles to light the lanterns. Five different objectives in the Luncheon Kingdom require lighting lanterns. A similarobjective involving a campfire is in theWooded Kingdom.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership
InMario & Luigi: Brothership, there are areas that have torches that must be lit using fireballs. Some torches, like those found onWayaway Island or TheSoli-Tree, can be carried to different stations.
