- “I found it down there inHooktail's belly. Nice, huh? I was gonna keep it as a souvenir... But if this is the thing you've been looking for, you can have it!”
- —Koopley,Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Nintendo Switch)
TheDiamond Star is the first of theCrystal StarsMario collects inPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, obtained upon completion of Chapter 1: Castle and Dragon.
Sometime after thefour heroes sealed theShadow Queen using the Crystal Stars, the dragonHooktail got ahold of the Diamond Star and ate it. 10 years prior to the events of the game,Koopley, who had been swallowed whole after failing to defeat the dragon, found the Diamond Star in her stomach and decided to hold onto it as a "souvenir". During their quest, Mario andhispartners traverse Hooktail Castle and defeat Hooktail in hopes of recovering the Diamond Star, as well as to stop her from continuing to terrorize the citizens ofPetalburg. Upon defeating her, Hooktail spits out Koopley, who gives Mario the Diamond Star for beinghis son's friend. Collecting the Diamond Star teaches Mario the moveEarth Tremor to use in battle.
The fourth question of both the65th and66th Trivia Quiz-Off asks about the location of the Diamond Star, with the correct answers being "Hooktail Castle" and "Hooktail's Belly" respectively. In one ofthe Creepy Steeple Boo's quizzes in the remake, the Diamond Star is an incorrect answer for "Which Crystal Star was found inside theX-Naut Fortress?", possibly to trick the player considering its similar appearance to the correct answer, theCrystal Star.
During the final battle with the Shadow Queen, when the Crystal Stars spread out to the locations in which they were found, the Diamond Star retreats to Petalburg, where its residents, including Koopley,Kroop andKoopie Koo cheer on for Mario and his team.

Notes
- The Diamond Star and theGold Star are the only Crystal Stars that are not from a chapter that involves theX-Nauts or theThree Shadows in any way.
- However, as revealed in the post-Chapter 1 intermission, the X-Nauts were aware of Hooktail "maybe" having a Crystal Star.
