Air Bags,[1] also calledBalloon-in-the-Boxes[2] and once referred to asballoon bullies,[3] are giant pink balloon enemies that reside inMystery Crates inYoshi's Story. Their name is based on the name of the real-lifeairbag, found in vehicles to prevent injury during a collision.
History
Yoshi's Story
Exclusively found in the second half of thePage 1 levelSurprise!!, Air Bags are found within Mystery Crates that theBaby Yoshis cannot push or destroy viaground-pounding. Air Bags can be revealed by shooting anegg or one ofHuffin Puffin's chicks at the crates. Once revealed, Air Bags attack by blowing a strong gust of air at aYoshi that deals no damage, but it can risk pushing them into enemies. To defeat an Air Bag, the Yoshi mustthrow an egg or one of Huffin Puffin's chicks at the pair of bandages on its belly twice. Upon defeat, the bandages fall off and the Air Bag deflates until it disappears, leaving amelon.
Super Mario-kun
An Air Bag also appears in the19th volume ofSuper Mario-kun as an obstacle protecting aSpecial Heart.Red Yoshi defeats it when one of his shoes accidentally flies off and impacts the Air Bag's bandage.
