Library History
Malone’s library is named in honor of Everett L. Cattell, Ph.D., a former Malone president who also spent many years as a missionary in India. The building officially opened in 1972. The original collection of 62,000 books, which was physically carried from its former location in another campus building by Malone students and faculty in December 1971, has grown to more than 145,000 book and periodical volumes.
To increase our resources even more, Malone joined the OPAL (Ohio Private and Academic Libraries) consortium and later OhioLINK. When our resources are combined with those two networks, the Cattell Library provides access to millions of books, journal articles, and other library materials. Students can order physical items for automatic delivery to our campus and can access electronic materials directly from our library’s webpage.
University Collection
Our librarians actively curate a collection that supports the teaching, learning, and research needs of current Malone students and faculty. The library also holds the historical archives for Malone University and for the Evangelical Friends Church Eastern Region (EFC-ER).
Special Collections
Friends Library
The Friends Library is a special division of the Everett L. Cattell Library, which houses a diverse collection of Friends (Quaker) writings. Materials range from historical to contemporary, including Yearly Meeting minutes, genealogical information, periodicals, reports, and books. While numerous materials stem from Malone’s close relationship with the Evangelical Friends Church, the collection also includes Yearly Meeting minutes and documents from Friends churches nationwide.
Materials in this library are available for student, faculty, staff, and community patron use, and are circulated on the same basis as regular books.
Additional Friends Resources
Friends in North America generally worship in churches with pastors (programmed worship) or in silent, “unprogrammed” meetings.
While some meetings are part of the following of independent yearly meetings, most local Friends’ meetings in North America are affiliated with one of the following branches of Quakerism: (Descriptions provided are generalizations)

Curriculum Library
In order to support our students who are also teacher candidates, we offer a curriculum library which provides access to a wide range of educational textbooks and materials. Items are grouped by subject matter and grade level. In many cases, supporting workbooks, teacher guides, and lab manuals accompany the items.
Juvenile and Young Adult Section
Our collection of juvenile fiction and non-fiction works contains a variety of items from cherished favorites to contemporary authors, graphic novels, pop-up books, and more. Fiction for this younger audience is shelved separately, making it easier to find age-appropriate material. Books from this collections circulate to students, faculty/staff and community patrons.
Graphic Novel Collection
With the growing popularity of graphic novels, the Cattell Library collection has become an increasingly important part of Malone’s offerings. This collection highlights librarian and faculty-recommended titles for all age levels, including award winners (Art Speigelman’s Maus, for instance, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1992). Types of graphic novels include adventure, biographical, fantasy, superhero, horror, mystery, romance, science fiction and more. Standards for rating materials by age appropriateness are strictly applied.
