The Armorial Of Greatlitvan Nobility

Preface

From ancient times acoat of arms was used as a proof of family's lineage and its belonging to a noble estate. The series "The Armorial of Belarusian Nobility" has been published since 1996, its volumes are being prepared by the National Historical Archives of the Republic of Belarus. There are also Polish-language armorials of local nobility of several regions of the formerGrand Duchy of Litva (GDL), published in late 19th – early 20th century and based on legitimation cases which district (land) courts began reviewing almost immediately after the first partition of the Polish-Litvan Commonwealth and the occupation of the eastern territories of Litva by the Russian Empire.

Based on these publications, I have systematized the information about the coats of arms of theszlachta andtitled nobility, along with their bearers, which I am pleased to present here.

Theimages of shields have been reconstructed based on drawings from these publications and edited in accordance with currentheraldic standards. Some of the images are being published online for the first time.

General notes:

  1. The coats of arms are sorted alphabetically. For convenience and to facilitate further detailed searches, the alphabetical list is divided into roughly equal groups, each small enough to fit on a page.
  2. The title of a coat of arms is written above the image in Polish spelling. Alternative titles for the same coat of arms, as used in the sources, are given in brackets below the image.
  3. In cases of discrepancies between the depiction of a specific coat of arms and its classic version, the note "varian" is placed below the image.
  4. To facilitate navigation, an alphanumeric source code is assigned to each bearer'sfamily name:
