The Bahamas is a country consisting of more than 3,000 islands, cays and islets in the Atlantic Ocean, north of Cuba and southeast of the U.S. state of Florida. The capital of the Bahamas is Nassau on the island of New Providence. All of the country's main clubs are located on this small island. The Bahamas has a population of 354,000. Football was first introduced in the Bahamas just after World War I, when returning veterans continued to play friendly games. During the 1920’s and 30’s, clubs and teams from the three main districts in New Providence developed soccer as one of its sports, and matches were arranged from time to time. The popularity of the sport continued into the 50’s and in 1954, the first attempt to organise teams into a league was accomplished. During the late fifties and mid-sixties, the Bahamas Amateur Football Association oversaw the development of the the New Providence Sunday League | and the New Providence Saturday League. In 1968 the Bahamas Football Association’s application for full membership of FIFA was approved. Membership of CONCACAF followed in 1981. The BFA Senior League is the top division of Bahamian Football and was founded in 2008. The league is contested between 8 teams every season. The most successful soccer club since 2008/09 is IM Bears FC (Nassau). Before 2008 the league championship was played between the winners of the New Providence Football League, the Grand Bahama Football League and the Abaco Football League. Britam United and Cavalier FC were the most successful clubs. The Bahamas President's Cup is the top knockout tournament of the Bahamas football. The cup was created in 1999. |
