GrassBasewill ultimately provide an integrated, online view of the World GrassSpecies databases which have historically been held in two separatedownloadable databases. The first step towards this integration hasbeen the generation of nearly11,000 species descriptonsfrom the DELTA format that they're encoded in. In addition to this thesynonymy/nomenclature database now contains links to these speciesdescriptions integrated with searches for the accepted name andsynonyms for just over 60,000 grass names.
Further details of recent developments can be found on ourNews page which we will use to keep you informed of changes and updates in GrassBase.
This section of the database contains descriptions ofspecies andgeneraderived from a DELTA database. The species descriptions are allindividually coded from reliable sources such as Floristic accountswhere possible and supplemented by original descriptions andconsultation of specimens where necessary. These species descriptionpages include links that allow you to search a number of other onlinedatabases including theHerbarium Catalogue, theelectronic Plant Information Centre, GBIF, Tropicos and Google.
Thenomenclature portion of the database is currently held within adownloadable Microsoft Access database. This database can produceregional and country checklists, find the accepted name and synonymsfor over 60,000 grass names. Each of the accepted names is linked toit's species description page. Additional information that is availableinclude original citations and type locality data. You can download thedatabase from theSynonymy pages.
Inaddition to the data that we have available through the textualdescriptions, nomenclature database and interactive key, we havedeveloped a number of simple software tools that help make our jobseasier and users are invited to download and use this software fortheir own purposes. You can read more and download these programs on thesoftware page.
