A list of computers I worked on

Before computers were given names,I worked on:

graveyard

A sparc station, which was assigned to me whenI started working on theTransCoopproject on June 15, 1994. I used it till August 15, 1994,when it was replaced by therosarium. It was known as thegraveyard.cs.utwente.nl on the Internet.

annabel

December 1994 we bought our first PC from the CIV-shop at the Universityof Twente. A Mini Tower Highscreen 486 DX2-66 with:Through the years, I made a large number of modifications to thismachine. Below a short history:

rosarium

A Sparc Station IPC with black/white monitor, which I gotas an replacement of thegraveyardon August 15, 1994, when I worked for two months for theTransCoop project. I used till aroundJune 24, 1997,when it was replaced by thewhitehouse. It was known as therosarium.cs.utwente.nl on the Internet.

T1000

A Toshiba T1000 laptop, which I bought in February 1996 second-handfrom a student at the University of Twente after having placedan announcement in a local news group. One of the first things that I did was writing aprogram for exchanging files with Linux onannabel.

I used it extensively when I just needed to edit some text files.I brought it with me on ourtrip to China in thesummer of 1996, where I used forwriting my online diary, writing the initial versionof the Acorn Atom emulator, and readingZen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.Weleft it with our family inUrumqi, China.

andy

The second PC we bought on September 24, 1996 from Dynabyte Enschede. An Ollivetti Envison P75 with:Quite a strange PC. Apparently, intended to be placed in theliving room, because it was sold without monitor and it did havea scart plug on the back. Actually, on the back it did have manyconnectors, including midi in and out connectors. Also on the frontit had a clock display, buttons for the CD-ROM drive, and therewas a lid before the floppy drive. It came with a wireless keyboardwith a build-in track ball. Most of the specially functionality isintegrated on a custom made mother board. The machine apparently was introduced a few years too early,I am afraid. When we bought it, it was on sale.

At first we connected it to our TV through the video recorder(because our TV did not have a scart connector), but that was nota great success. Within a few weeks, on October 5, 1996, we boughtan additional monitor from ESCOM Office in Enschede, a 15 inch7156E monitor with serial number9000799819.

Later, I concluded that it was not a good investment to buythis machine. One of the main reasons for this, is that thebuild in video card was rather limited in its abilities and hadsome defects which made it impossible to play almost all of theCD-ROM games that I bought forAnnabel.

When the computer needed a name, I named it after my sonAndy.

In the fall of 2000, I installed an additional 8 Mbytes of ram, which improved the overal performance a lot.

On Saturday, March 10, 2001, connected it toester by means of a Multi PlayerGamers Network Kit bySitecom, which provides a 100 Mbit ethernet connection using a cross-overUTP cable.

For a long time we used it to connect to the Internet, buton Saturday, October 27, 2001, this task was taken over byester. By this, it is no longerour main working computer. Lately, the monitor attached to it,also seems to go wrong. Occasionally, the screen will go blackfor a second. It seems that the HT-unit is flashing.OnJanuary 1, 2002, I replacedthe monitor with thePhilips Brilliance15A monitor. I also connectedour scannerto it, making it into our "scan" computer.

OnSaturday, August 16, 2003, wemoved this computer, including theattachedprinter, to the bedroom ofAnnabel.

OnSaturday, May 14, 2005, I removedthe monitor and connected it tolixia.

On Friday, August 12, 2005, I moved it from the bedroom of Annabelto the attic, because it is no longer operational without monitor.

OnMonday, December 26, 2011, removedhard disk, netword card and memory modules.

OnMonday, January 2, January 2012, Idisposed of this computer.

ester

We ordered this computer onFebruary 17, 2001withFunPrice. OnSaturday, March 3, 2001, I got it from the shop. This computer has the following configuration, besides the normal stuff:Originally, we ordered a 30 Gbyte Seagate Baracuda-2 7200 RPM hard disk, but we got the Maxtor. At home, one of the first things I did, was openingthe machine to have a look inside. In the evening, I removed theseagate ST51270A hard disk from theannabel, and installed it as a slave on the first IDE bus. Of course, I alsohad to borrow the Highscreen MS 1460P monitor fromannabel. The name of the this computer is the same as the middle name ofAnnabel, our daugther.

On Saturday, March 10, 2001, connected it toandy by means of aMulti PlayerGamers Network Kit bySitecom, which provides a 100 Mbit ethernet connection using a 8 meter cross-overUTP cable.

OnSaturday, October 27, 2001, I madethis into our primary machine. I hooked it up to the modem (fromandy), and installed the second handCD-ROM drive fromannabel.

On Saturday, November 16, 2001, I added a 256 Mbyte memory module, whichI bought for less then 50 USD, just before the prices went up again.(This means that the main memory can now hold up to 1.2 billion bits of data.)On that day, I also removed the CD-ROM drive, and replaced it by a 16x speedSony CD-ROM drive, a model CDU571 with serial number 2349626, manufacturedin September 1997, which I bought frommy companyon Tuesday, November 13, 2001.

On Sunday,February 24, 2002, I discovered that certain types of CD get stuckinto the Sony CD-ROM drive. So, we temporarily used the 10 speed CD-ROMdrive again during the day.OnSaturday, March 16, 2002, I upgradedthe firmware of our Iomega CD recorder.

Monday, March 25, 2002, I bought aLifetec® digitizer tablet andhooked it up to this computer

Monday, April 23, 2002, I upgraded the BIOS to W6330MS version 3.2 of112901 17:20:54. I alse replaced the graphics card by a ASUS V7700 TI Deluxe.I spend almost two whole day to get the video capature abilities towork. Finally, I got it working when I discovered that I should not fixthe card with a screw onto the back of the computer.

OnSunday, April 28, 2002, we moved thiscomputer to the kitchen table.

On Sunday, September 5, 2004, the CD-ROMburner broke down. It looks like the laser is broken. The next day, Ibought a new 52x52x24 burner for € 30 fromFunprice and installedit in the evening. I did open the old burner, just to make sure thatthe troubles had not been caused by dust or something like that.

OnJune 12, 2005, theHighscreen MS 1460 P Monitor, which was attached to it, died, and I connected thePhilips Brilliance 15A monitortillJune 18 when I attached theAcer AL1913 TFT monitor to it.

OnJuly 9, 2005, it swapped places withlixia, and was put under the computer desk, and attached the Philips Brilliance 15A monitor to it again.

OnJuly 9, 2006, in an attempt to reorganizethe main drive, I lost a lot of old data.

OnJanuary 8, 2008 it became very instableexperiencing reboots and lock-ups almost immediately after starting.OnJanuary 13, 2008, I had these problemsfixed again.

On December 22, 2008, I moved it to the attic, because two daysearlier, I placedlixia at its placeand it was placed on the table in the living room.

In the evening ofMarch 27, 2009, Isecured some data from this computer, which required some little hacking.

OnSunday, July 4, 2010, I movedthe 52x52x24 burner intolixia.

OnSunday, August 11, 2013, I dismantled it.

I had never dreamt of giving a computer the name of myself, but appearently, at current employerthis is the common practice. In a way it is also not toobad, because I have never found it easy to remember who ison which machine.
