The InternationalUnion
officiallynamed:
The InternationalUnion for Land Value Taxation and Free Trade
[Free Trade meaning:Tradefreed from monopolies and privileges,and fromregulations andrestrictionsexcept those protecting human Life, Health, Equal Rights andthe Environment(More details: Click here!)]
andsubtitled:
The International GeorgistUnion
focuseson the fact that:
Crowds of People live in misery and distress,though
- Nature is rich andgenerous !
- Mankind is able tofulfil any want !
- Capital for investmentsexists in plenty !
Wealth is in abundance, but -
The number of poor people is increasing worldwide, and
The gap between rich and poor people expands- everywhere;both in rich and in poor countries.
The causeof this is
A GREATINEQUITY
- that neither"Planned Economics"nor "Economic Privatisation"havemanaged to sort out;
- that Charities and Social Security Benefits are able to mitigate, butcannoteliminate;
- that PoliticalEqual Rightsand PersonalEqual Rights are insufficient to solve.
Thefollowers of the International Union claimforthe purpose of ending theGREAT INEQUITY and the troubles it causes, that
People need alsoEconomicEqual Rights
to the values of Nature andSociety,
whichclaim is based on the convictionthat:
· Human beings are born withequal rights to life andfreedomincluding
equal rights to thegifts of Natureand to theadvantages of Society.
Theyexpress this by the allegations that:
· Naturalresourcesare theCommon Heritageof all human beings, and thevalues of natural resources areCommon Property belongingto all citizens on an equal footing;
· Societyprovides advantages that are vital to human beings too. These advantages arethosenot created by any individualperson or by a specific group of individuals, but createdby the citizens'synergetic co-operationand by the citizens’ government and itsadministration’s planning,buildingand maintaining infrastructure, running public works and services, enforcinglaw and order, etc.
Therefore, the values of advantages ofsociety arealso Common Property belonging to all citizens on an equalfooting;
which lead to theassertions that:
· Holders ofExclusiveRights to use valuable sites or other advantages of nature and/orsociety,owe all citizens fairCompensationfor their encroachment of thecitizens’equal rights to the values ofCommon Properties.
· Exclusion of people from free use ofCommon Propertieswithout payingequivalent compensation to those excluded maintains theGreatInequity and violates the principle ofEconomic Equal Rights for all citizens.
Thefollowers of the International Union urge for eradication of the bad effects ofmonopolies and privileges and require abolition of monopolies and privilegesas far asthat is possibleunless they are part of a scheme thatprotects human beings’ lives, health or the environment; the bad effects of remaining monopolies/ privileges shouldbe checked by 1)public collection of the market-determined rental valueof the monopolies/ privileges, and 2)use of the revenue for thebetterment of all citizens on an equal footing.
The result-when the bad effects of monopolies and privileges areexterminated - will be thatEconomic Equal Rights replacethe Great Inequity, and thechange will take effect in democracies when the majority of citizens
- understand thattheyarethe rightful owners ofCommonProperties on an equal footing with their fellow citizens;
and they
- loud, clearlyand persistently demand thattheir Government on their behalf enacts andenforces:
ÕPubliccollection-from the holders of exclusiverights to useCommon Properties -of the market-determined highest annualamounts that some are willing to pay for taking over or keeping the exclusiverights in question;and
ÕUse of therevenue for the bettermentof all citizens on an equal footing.
Theuse of the revenue for the betterment of all citizens on an equal footing may be effectuated in different ways, either:
1. byfinancing commonly neededNewPublic Tasks such as installation, expansion or maintenance ofinfrastructure, public education, health service, transport systems, watersupply, waste water disposal, etc. (some people would call this the socialisticmodel);or
2. byequal distribution - an equalCitizens Dividend- to all citizens having citizenship to the country in questionwhatever the citizenship has been obtained by birth or by naturalization (somepeople would call this the libertarian model);or
3. byreduction or abolition of taxeson anything else but exclusive use ofCommonProperties (Ÿdotsabove);which willLift the Deadweightoff theeconomy(this is a modelproposed by economists);or
4. bya combination of above mentioned1, 2, and/or 3.
Whatever the choice will be 1 or 2 or both, it willEnd the Great Inequityand all
the citizens will enjoy theirEqual Rightsto thevalues of Common Property
The result of using 2 will also be that most of the need for social security benefit willease off, the need for public expenses will decline, and the government will beenabled to reduce taxes, tariffs and imposts on other things than exclusive useof Common Properties.
This will make life easier in the society, less poverty, moredignity, stronger feeling of citizens’ fellowship, strengthened democracy, lesscrime; it will increase the value of life and of the society, and that willincrease the revenue of public collection of the values of exclusive rights touse Common Properties.
When 3 has been carried through, maybe as a result of use of 2, or of 1 and 2 incombination, tocomplete abolition oftaxes, tariffs and imposts of every sort on anything else but exclusive rightsto use of Common Properties,
the citizens will enjoy alsoIndividual Rightstothe Full Results of their Lawful Exertions
---
When the Great Inequity is abolishedthe market is freed fromthe bad effects of monopolies and privileges, and allcitizens enjoyEqualEconomic Rights,all this achieved because holders ofExclusiveRights to useCommon Property paythe annual values of exclusive rights to the Government whouses the revenue for the betterment of all citizens on an equal footing,then
All citizens - including Wage Earners -will enjoy the Advantages of Competition !
Without suffering from previousdisadvantages !
Therefore the followers of the International Union propose that:
When holders of exclusive rights pay to thepublic purse theexcess profit to beused for the betterment of all citizens on an equal footing,then Domestic and Foreign Trade andIndustry shall be encouraged tocompete as efficiently and freely aspossiblewithin the framesof restrictions that prevent from:
- damaging nature (and its power ofregeneration);
- injuring human beings’ health or lives;
- capturing for their private use publiclycreated values; and
- withholding excess profit accruing from theCommon Properties(theŸdots above).
Consequently people with GREEN ATTITUDE to economics, production and trade will findthat Competition in a market freed from the bad effects of monopolies and privilegesand keptwithin the frames of green regulations, will:
- reduce Waste of resources - also reduce useof“greenfield” rural land;
- increase Usefulness of used resources -also increase use of“brownfield”urban land.
The advantages of competition will be supported to the utmost by:
Abolition of as many monopoliesand privileges as possibleand
Public Collection of the rentalvalues of tolerated monopolies and privilege.
The followers of the International Union want toestablish
a marketwithoutbad effects of monopolies and privileges,andwithcompetition as free as possiblewithinthe frame of enforcedregulation that efficiently protects Human Beings and the Environment
by measures listed in the following short lines:
>Freeingthe market frommonopolies and privileges so far as this is possible;
>Publiccollection of the potential excess profit of tolerated monopolies andprivileges, and use of the revenue for the betterment of all citizens on anequal footing.
>Lifting thedeadweight from economics by abolition of taxes on anything else but thepotential excess profit of tolerated monopolies and privileges;
>Abolition ofrestrictions and regulations of industry and trade unless they areprotecting human beings’ lives, health, equal rights or the environment;
>Enforcement ofrestrictions and regulations that protect human beings’ lives, health,equal rights and the environment.
The above> marked means- working in concert - will increase the potentialExcessprofit of exclusive rights to use Common Properties and provide revenue big enough to finance allpublic activities that benefit the citizens,instead of today’s taxesthat hamper production and causeDeadweighton Economics.
Then theExcessprofit of exclusive right to use or hold Common Properties willbenefit all citizens instead of benefiting only the holders of valuablemonopolies/ privileges.
Then the citizens will enjoyEconomicEqual Rightswhichthey have neverenjoyed before.
Then productive investors and productivemanpower will get and be allowed to keep for their own use the total rewardsfor their participation in supplying demanded goods and services.
Thenit will be easy to solve the remaining, serious problems of the society.
Whatfollowers of the IU have done - and are doing
The followers of these ideas - briefly described above - have indetail explained their expectations and how they may be implemented in a widerange of websites, magazines, books, reports, papers, declaration, etc., aselection of which you may choose among from the MENU at the end of this frontpage.
The views and assertions referred to above are founded on ideasthat have been considered through centuries by many philosophers andeconomists, both living and dead. The most popular expression of these ideaswas explained in the works of the journalist, philosopher and economist HenryGeorge who lived in theUnited States of America in the 19thcentury.
These ideas have been proposed to politicians and administrators,and partially implemented in many countries; everywhere they have been attackedand often been watered down or destroyed by influential people of wealth andprivileges and their supporters, who benefited, and still benefit, bycollecting and withholding commonly created values for themselves.
The bookLand-ValueTaxation around the World describes where and how these ideas have been used and where andhow they are working today. The 3rd edition edited by Dr. Robert VAndelson was published in December 2000 and is available from theRobertSchalkenbach Foundation, Click here - and wait a while! Bookshops aresupposed to order from the publisherBlackwell Publishers, Clickhere! In several countries the book is also available from local publiclibraries on demand.
People who support the above-mentioned ideas are commonly calledGeorgists, and they make the ideas more widely known by individual activity ortogether with others through Think Tanks, Research Groups, Information Centres,Publishing, Education, etc., and/or they are funding these endeavours byLegacies and Donations.
