How to locate observations of specific behaviours?

Once I've got sufficient observations to begin a traditional project on iNaturalist I'm interested in setting one up documenting intraspecific predation on elasmobranchs but I'm unclear on how best to locate these observations.

I've collected a number already in my favourites purely by luck and searching for the word "predation" in tags but I highly doubt I've scratched the surface. With AI capacity increases it would be good to see compute vision not only able to guess at the spe...

Project data permissions and selecting the right permissions for you and your data

When you first sign up for iNaturalist you are automatically assigned a Creative Commons (CC) licence for your data. But did you know there are different types of licences?

The default licence (CC-BY-NC) sadly does not allow scientific bodies that may be interested in biodiversity or species distribution data to access your records. If you could like your records to have a larger benefit to science, we recommend changing your licence to either No Copywrite (CC0) or Attribution (...

Fun Facts about the Eastern Kingbird!

  1. During the summer the Eastern Kingbird eats mostly flying insects and maintains a breeding territory that it defends vigorously against all other kingbirds. In the winter along the Amazon, however, it has a completely different lifestyle: it travels in flocks and eats fruit.

  2. It’s not called a kingbird for nothing. The Eastern Kingbird has a crown of yellow, orange, or red feathers on its head, but the crown is usually concealed. When it encounters a potential preda...

Fun Facts about the Steller’s Jay!

  1. Steller's and Blue jays are the only North American jays with crests.

  2. Steller’s Jays have the dubious honor of being one of the most frequently misspelled names in all of bird watching. Up close, the bird’s dazzling mix of azure and blue is certainly stellar, but that’s not how you spell their name. Steller’s Jays were discovered on an Alaskan island in 1741 by Georg Steller, a naturalist on a Russian explorer’s ship. When a scientist officially described the speci...

Fun Facts about the Golden Eagle!

  1. The Golden Eagle is the most common official national animal in the world—it's the emblem of Albania, Germany, Austria, Mexico, and Kazakhstan.

  2. Although capable of killing large prey such as cranes, wild ungulates, and domestic livestock, the Golden Eagle subsists primarily on rabbits, hares, ground squirrels, and prairie dogs.

  3. Because their common prey animals (mammals) don’t tend to ingest pesticides, Golden Eagles have escaped the harm sustained ...

U tohoto druhu nelétají nejen samice ale i samečci.Samci mají hnědočernou barvu, výrazná tykadla, a díky pahýlům redukovaných krovek i svou celkovou hbitostí mohou svým vzhledem připomínat spíše drabčíky.

April is going to be busy!

Reporting on the last 2 weeks because, sadly, the rain has postponed a few nest box monitoring activities. We hope that the volunteers who couldn't make it will have a second chance to sign-up and join one of the future monitoring events!

Three monitoring activities occurred, around the South side of the Sunshine Coast.

The first one was fully booked with 5 amazing returning citizen scientists who were eager to monitor Ben Bennett Bushland Park. They knocked off 10 nest bo...

365 mosses: day 100

I found this moss in the ‘cup’ of a potted Bromeliad (for those not familiar with Bromeliads, their leaves form a cup which holds water) in the greenhouse. I didn’t immediately recognise it, so I took some over to the lab to look at it under a microscope. I still didn’t immediately recognise it. Based on cell shape and growth form, I figured it was probably in either the Brachytheciaceae or Amblystegiaceae family. I eventually narrowed it down to a few possibilities, and finally concluded ...

Plant ID Workshop - Plant and Soil Society, The University of Melbourne

I joined the Plant ID Workshop - Plant and Soil Society, The University of Melbourne. In the workshop, I learned about different ways to documents plant in everyday setting, such as creating a Natural History Journal, plant and flower press, and iNaturalist apps. We walked around the University of Melbourne to find and identify several plants.

My Milestones

Milestones

The following is a list of the milestones that I find important and wish iNat would record/display. I've long been a proponent of gamifying citizen science to increase data collection, but this will have to do for now! These milestones are grouped by several factors, such astype (observation/identification/species) andtaxonomic group (overall/animals/birds/plants). More sections will be added as the milestones are met!

Planning a Grass Roots Bioblitz

In 2024, The Bureau of Land Management and Nevada Department of Wildlife cosponsored the first bioblitz at Gold Butte National Monument. This year those two organizations are focusing their resources at Avi Kwa Ame National Monument. This presented an opportunity for the Friends of Gold Butte (FoGB), a donation based conservation organization located in Mesquite, NV, to plan and execute this year's bioblitz.

FoGB had less than three months until the 100+ F day-time temps were upon ...

Update - April 6

Common Green Darners are now reported from across the state in March. 57 observations, 14 counties, 21 different observers. All good. We also have some April records. We needed this week's precipitation to recharge the wetlands, but I'm ready for some sunshine and warmer days.

The April issue for Ohio Dragon Flyer is now ready. It is distributed via the Ohio Odonata Society website. Connect at

Pelicans on the Pond

Arrived early to the Blanca Vista park with my pups. While the dogs enjoyed running free in the dog park area, I scanned the neighboring pond. Pelicans, avocets, gulls, and geese huddled together on a flat. The pond was steaming, the early morning light was reflecting off the water, and I discovered just how smudged my binocular lens were. There was too much cloud coverage to say "good morning" to our local fourteener, but I know she must be enjoying her new coat of snow. We need the water...
