The Sabres won Sweeney's rights after a dispute with Calgary, which had also tried to claim him off waivers. The dispute arose over the order in which teams were eligible to choose players on the waiver wire. Since the season had not yet begun when Sweeney was waived, there was no set claim order based on reverse position in the standings. Thus, claim order was based on the 1991-92 season's finish, when both Buffalo and Calgary had 31 wins and 74 points. Based on a tiebreaker procedure, the NHL ruled that the Sabres had finished below the Flames and were entitled to claim Sweeney first. |
