Mount Allison
University

 , located in Sackville, is the only university in New Brunswick that has a football program. The school first fielded a Canadian Rules football team in 1955. They play in Atlantic University Sport. The Mounties take their nickname, not from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, but rather from being Mt. A's team hence the "Mt. A's" or the "Mounties".
      The Mounties have made it to the A.U.S. title game ten times, coming away as champions in 1984, 1985, 1991 and 1997. In 1984 and 1991 they also won the Atlantic Bowl and thus advanced to the Vanier Cup game for the Canadian university championship. Unfortunately they lost a tough 22-13 game to Guelph in 1984 and fell 25-18 to Wilfred Laurier in 1991.
      The Mount Allison University football program places major emphasis on recruiting Maritime athletes. In 2003 the 76 player Mountie roster included 44 players (58%) from the Maritimes. That compared to 44% at St. F.X., 33% at Saint Mary's and 24% at Acadia.

        The University of New Brunswick in Fredericton played football from 1948 until 1980. The Red Bombers were A.U.A.A. champions in 1969 and 1970. The decision to scrap the program was released to the press in June, 1981. The administration waited until the students had gone home for the summer before it made the announcement . Other schools in the country saved their football programs by asking their Alumni to take over the funding. U.N.B. chose not to take this approach. In fact two proposals ,one in 1988 and the other in 1996, sought to revive the program at no cost to the university. Both plans were given hostile receptions by the school administration and thus were doomed to failure. 
        In 2009 football was revived as a "club" sport. The U.N.B. Red Bombers played in the inaugural season of the. 

         St. Thomas University in Fredericton had a football program from 1949 until 1967. St. Thomas students are eligible to play on the Red Bombers "club" team formed in 2009.
