Ten years before the hotel opens its doors, James Braid, renowned golf course designer and five-time Open Champion, and his assistant, Cecil Key Hutchison, are appointed to create two golf courses for a fee of £120 plus expenses.
1919

On the 1st of May The King’s Course (6,125 yards) and The Queen’s Course (2,505 yards), royal names befitting their standard, officially open.

In May, the first tournament is held at Gleneagles, the Scottish Professional Championship, won by Tom Fernie (Turnberry), collecting the £150 prize offered by North British Rubber Co.The inaugural Glasgow Herald £650 Tournament was also played and attracted the game’s very best.

The Glasgow Herald 1,000 Guineas Tournament is staged ahead of The Open Championship at St Andrews. The first-ever ‘International Challenge Match’ between British and American professionals is also played and is recognised as ‘an inspiration to the Ryder Cup’. Upon arrival in Scotland, the American team discovers the hotel has yet to be completed, and has to sleep in converted train cars!

The Queen’s Course is extended to 18 holes.The Silver Tassie (1925 –64) becomes the premier competition for the cream of the world’s amateurs.

The British Ladies’ Amateur Championship is contested at Gleneagles.

The 3rd Curtis Cup Match is played on 6thMay on the King's Course. The match ends in a tie and the United States, as the holders, retain the trophy.

The Gleneagles / SaxonePro-Am (Foursomes). The first event of its kind, entry is restricted to the first 25 professionals in the world and seven specially invited players, each of whom chose their amateur partners.

Gleneagles’ Head Golf Professional, the late Ian Marchbank, gives golf lessons to cinema legend, Sean Connery.

‘The Big Three in Britain’ –an exhibition match with Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

International Pro-Celebrity Golf –a televised series of exhibition matches with golf pros and celebrities –introduces Gleneagles to new audiences worldwide.Hosted by Peter Alliss, celebrities Sir Sean Connery, Sir Bruce Forsyth and Sir Terry Wogan competed alongside leading professionals of the era including Tom Watson, Greg Norman and Seve Ballesteros.

Plans begin for a third championship course at Gleneagles, designed by arguably the world’s greatest ever golfer, Jack Nicklaus. Built over the former Glendevon Course, the former Prince’s Course, as well as additional land, the remaining holes of Prince’s were incorporated into a nine-hole ‘Wee Course’.

The Bell’s Scottish Open event at Gleneagles (1987 –1994) showcases a who’s who from the men’s game the week before The Open Championship and becomes one of the most fondly recalled events on the European Tour.In 1992 Australian Peter O’Malley plays the final five holes in 13 shots, seven under par, (still the greatest finish in European Tour history) to pip Colin Montgomerie to the title.

The 15th of May sees the official opening of the Monarch’s Course with ‘The Monarch’s Challenge,’ including a celebrity event featuring Jack Nicklaus, Sir Jackie Stewart and Sir Sean Connery.

The McDonald’s WPGA Championship is played, with Catriona Matthew a home winner in 1998.

1999
European Tour golf returns to Gleneagles with the Scottish PGA Championship and Diageo Championship with Paul Casey becoming the only player to win at Gleneagles twice.

In February The Monarch’s is renamed The PGA Centenary Course to celebrate the centenary year of The PGA, with The PGA Scottish Regional headquarters also moving to Gleneagles in 2001.

2005
Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, with Scotsmen Marc Warren and Paul Lawrie triumphing in 2007 and 2012 respectively. The final event in 2013 is won by Tommy Fleetwood.

The Junior Ryder Cup, an international event between Europe and the USA designed to showcase golf’s next generation. The USA, featuring Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, win 13.5 –10.5.

The Ryder Cup is played from 26-28 September, the biggest team event in golf, contested between Europe and the USA. Paul McGinley’s European side won 16.5 –11.5 with Jamie Donaldson securing the winning point on the 15th green.

Gleneagles makes sporting history by hosting the Glasgow 2018 European Golf Team Championships, with Europe’s elite male and female golfers competing side-by-side for equal prize money for the first time.

The Solheim Cup is played from 13-15 September, and is the highest attended women’s golf event ever held in the UK. Catriona Matthew’s European side wins 14.5 –13.5, with Suzann Pettersen securing the winning point with the final putt, in the final game, on the 18th green.
