Freedom of the Borough parade in Woking marks honour for Pirbright Army Training Centre

Crowds gathered as a special parade in Jubilee Square took place to celebrate the occasion

Onlookers enjoyed an impressive military parade to mark the Army Training Centre (ATC) inPirbright being awarded honorary Freedom of the Borough.


Woking welcomed its army residents to Jubilee Square for the parade on St George's Day (Sunday April 23).


There was a marching band playing while Union Jacks were waved to celebrate the special honour.

The Freedom of the Borough recognises exceptional contributions, or distinctive service to the borough by an individual or group of individuals.

ATC was officially handed the honour in December 2016 when, during a special council meeting, Cllr Anne Murray, Mayor of Woking, presented a ceremonial certificate to mark the occasion.

At the time she said: "The honour of Freedom of the Borough is not lightly awarded and signifies the esteem that the services and soldiers of the centre are held in."

When the honour was granted, Cllr John Kingsbury, leader ofWoking Borough Council , said he was "delighted that the privilege will be conferred on all ranks of the ATC."

In 2012theArmed Forces Community Covenant was signed by the Centre, Woking Borough Council and members of public bodies.


On the same daySt George's Day parades took place across Surrey , with young and old coming together to honour the patron saint of England.
