Met Office names areas of England facing more snow by Thursday

Heavy snow could return to England overnight says the Met Office, as well as ice and other parts of the UK could also be affected.

Snow has settled across several parts of the UK in the past few days and more is expected by Thursday according to the latest snow maps issued by theMet Office.

Yorkshire, Cumbria and Scotland as well as several other parts of England have all hadsnow this past week, leading to the closure of a major A-road on Friday and now theMet Office has forecast even more of the white stuff arriving on Wednesday or Thursday depending on where you live. By Thursday, even London is likely to see snow, according to the latest forecasts. The Met Office's snow maps show snow will begin to sweep into the south of England and almost all of Wales by Wednesday evening by 9pm, before spreading to London and other areas by Thursday morning.

The forecaster shows that areas including Reading, Southampton, Swindon, Hereford, Yeovil, Exeter and Cambridge will see snow on Wednesday, and in Wales, Swansea, Cardiff, Aberystwyth and Newtown will see snow too. By 3am on Thursday, London will also see snowfall.

TheMet Office’s forecast for Tuesday to Thursday says: "Largely dry and bright on Tuesday. Remaining often dry in the north on Wednesday and Thursday, but a risk of some rain and hill snow in the south. Frosty nights."

And for Thursday, it adds: "Showers or longer spells of rain, as well as occasional strong winds, are most likely at first as Atlantic low pressure systems dominate in the vicinity of the UK. Some heavy rain is likely in places, with some snow probable at times, mainly on high ground in the north.

"Temperatures varying from around, or a little above, average especially in the south to cold at times, mainly in the north. Although unsettled weather is likely to dominate at first, there will be some drier interludes between weather systems. These drier interludes will become increasingly likely and perhaps more prolonged through the period."

It added in its advice on dealing with snow: "Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls.

"If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.

"Snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous. Keep yourself and others safe by planning your route, giving yourself extra time for your journey. Check for road closures or delays to public transport and amend plans if necessary.
