Shaping tomorrow

We are proud to take an active part in shaping Ireland’s future. To work with the government, clients and communities to plan, build and sustain infrastructure that will advance and enhance the Irish way of life.

The Egis team have been active in Ireland since 1984, evolving and expanding over time into a company that offers an end-to-end service; planning, designing and operating smart cities, active travel systems, water and energy infrastructure, buildings and structures.

In 2023 JB Barry and Partners was welcomed into Egis, bringing our award-winning team to almost 600 members across 16 offices nationwide. Our Team includes designers, engineers, surveyors, project managers, technologists, geo-technical and environmental teams, asset and maintenance managers and quantity surveyors all working together

We work in partnership with public sector clients and private companies both at home and internationally, and we are committed to supporting the government in realising their climate, infrastructural and societal goals as part of Project Ireland 2040

Our key areas of expertise:
  • Rail & Urban transit
  • Active travel
  • Roads and bridges
  • Water & Wastewater
  • Smart cities
  • Energy
  • Consulting and Operations
A synergistic service – from idea to design to operation.

Egis is the only engineering & operations company in Ireland to have a presence across the full value chain– from upstream feasibility studies and design, planning and construction supervision, to handover, operations and maintenance for decades into the future. The synergy between our services means that we can bring an unmatched breadth of expertise and understanding to the infrastructure in its entirety. The shared knowledge of our multi-disciplinary team allows us to create efficient, sustainable and future-focused infrastructure that shapes the world around it .

Building a better world.

As engineers we are always working to evolve and enhance the world around us to benefit society, communities and families, while at the same time supporting our clients in overcoming climate challenges and creating effective and efficient, sustainable solutions.

We have demonstrated our commitment to these aims across a wide range of projects including our supervision and civil engineering lead on the N22 Baile Bhuirne to Macroom bypass, which reduced congestion while decreasing toxic emissions from transportation in Macroom by a massive 50%. As well as our ongoing work designing,  maintaining, operating and supervising Ireland’s main transportation corridors; our tunnels and 470KM of motorways. Not to mention our design of active travel corridors for cyclists and pedestrians, connecting towns and cities all over Ireland as well as the 1,700 new homes currently in development that have been designed by our teams.

Our philosophy

In public transport we’re helping deliver the proposed Luas Finglas extension, itself an extension of our original design for Dublin’s first Luas in 1994.

We’re currently modernising the signalling and train management system on behalf of Irish Rail, helping to improve network safety along 2,400 km of the country’s network. In rail our expertise stretches from feasibility studies to ticketing solutions – to depots, operations, maintenance, analytics, and asset management.

In Cork, we are partners in the delivery of the signalling and communications solution for Cork Area Commuter Rail (CACR), a project that will establish a fully integrated metropolitan area rail network for the city. The CACR programme will enhance and develop over 62km of rail network from Mallow, through to Cork, Cobh, and Midleton.

Continual improvement in Asset Management, Maintenance and Operations.

We are the country’s largest independent operator of infrastructure, and now maintain and manage 470 KM of Ireland’s motorways, and all of its tunnels.

The Dublin Tunnel at 4.7km is one of Europe’s largest urban tunnels, and one of Ireland’s most significant pieces of infrastructure. Tunnel control buildings also house Ireland’s Motorway Traffic Control Centre, equipped with a 55-screen wall monitored 24/7 by our traffic management team who liaise with emergency response services and maintenance teams to ensure safer, frictionless travel for motorway users.

Our asset management and maintenance management teams work continuously to drive efficiencies for users and our clients in Transport Infrastructure Ireland. In 2023 we deployed an initiative to replace all 1,800 lights in Dublin Tunnel, delivering a cost saving as well as an estimated 60% reduction in energy consumption. Our motorway operations teams rolled out similar energy savings through lighting scheme upgrades in Ireland’s M1 North-Link motorway.

Our Links motorway tolling operations all attained ISO50001 in 2023, certifying our energy management approach.

We run the national Disability Toll Exemption Scheme and the nationwide mobile speed enforcement camera systems on behalf of the government, using smart systems designed by and continually updated by us.

Supporting ecological and energy transition.

As a group, Egis has committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions carbon neutral by 2050.

In Ireland we are committed helping support ecological and energy transition in delivery & and operation of projects, pushing to improve operational efficiency, minimise resource consumption, waste generation, emissions and monitoring environmental performance.

Since 2018 we have already cut carbon emissions by 17% across our road networks and use renewable energy across 50% of our operations. From detailed environmental impact assessments to dedicated programmes to boost biodiversity, we ensure projects meet the highest standards for sustainability, recognised by our ISO 14001/50001 Energy & Environmental Management certification across our Irish operations.

Bigger to go further

As planners, designers, engineers and operators we know that what we do today will echo into the future. Our plans must put the planet first and with that ethos Egis has committed to supporting our clients in overcoming climate challenges through the systematic reduction in emissions in design and operation of infrastructure to achieve net zero by 2050.

We are committed to helping support ecological and energy transition across all of our projects, pushing to improve operational efficiency, minimize resource consumption, waste generation, emissions and monitoring environmental performance.

We use renewable energy across 50% of our operations, and we are constantly working to improve that number. Globally 40% of our revenue is generated from projects that contribute to energy transition or incorporate ecodesign principles in their creation, and we’re driving to make that 100% of all projects. From climate-smart design to incorporating digital and technological innovations into our projects, as well as strategic material selection and processing, we ensure projects meet the highest standards for sustainability, recognised by our ISO 14001/50001  Energy & Environmental Management certification.

Shaping things to come

At Egis we operate across the entire value chain, from consulting and engineering to operation and mobility services. Our projects span every aspect of the built environment, transport and energy, and include:

  • Upgrading 60 of Ireland’s waste transport facilities, that serve 2.4 million people in Ireland
  • Developing the multi-modal transport corridor, connecting Ireland’s second and third cities
  • Redesigning urban village centres, returning them to ‘living streets’ and communities
  • Designing hospitals and medical plants
  • Designing compact urban residential developments and high-tech industrial plants
  • Managing critical infrastructure
  • Maintaining the state's assets including motorways and tunnels.

As one of the world’s leading architectural, engineering, consulting and operating firms, with global experience of building bigger and better, Egis is best placed to implement the local, regional and national changes required to ensure a sustainable, inclusive and accessible future for all.
