Zindagi channel treats Indian viewers to the best Pakistani dramas on offer

Zee Entertainment Enterprise Limited (Zeel), the largest television network of India, marked a new beginning in the history of Indian television with its newest venture, Zindagi, featuring top-listed Pakistani dramas.

Since its launch on June 23, Indians are being treated to the best of new-age Pakistani TV dramas on offer. Hum TV’s booming successZindagi Gulzar Hai and A-Plus’Aun Zara have earned much praise and appreciation in Indian newspapers as well as on social media.

Zee had been meaning to bring about such a revolution in programming for quite some time now. In an email interview with Dawn, Priyanka Datta, Business Head of Zindagi, shares the idea behind launching this new channel and the response it has received from Indian viewers.

Question: What is the idea behind launching Zindagi with Pakistani TV shows?

PD: The content of Zindagi echoes Zeel’s corporate philosophy ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – The world is my family’, which means that people across the world might have different cultures, traditions, culinary habits or lifestyles, but the stories of their lives are universal.

In the first phase, Zindagi is airing handpicked content from Pakistan. In the future, we will showcase content from various countries, which have some degree of cultural affinity with India such as Turkey, Egypt and Latin America among others. The unique selling point of Zindagi versus existing Hindi General Entertainment Channels (GECs) currently in India is that it's the only Hindi channel that has content from overseas and its shows are of finite duration and do not go on for years.

In the first phase, we decided to launch the channel with Pakistani content because Pakistani shows are aired in Urdu, a language that is very close to Hindi. Any Hindi speaking person can identify with the language and relate with it.

Also, all the existing GECs in India are catering to audiences with traditional mindsets. But there is also an audience base with progressive mindsets who are trying to find the perfect balance between their personal and professional lives in contemporary times. They are looking for content which is progressive and real in nature, something they can relate to. Hence, we decided to launch Zindagi, a channel to cater to their needs. We believe that the content on Zindagi lends itself very well to that mindset of audiences. The content is unique because it is fresh and different from the current content that you see on GECs in terms of script, talent; it is shot in real locations and has original soundtracks.

Question: How has the response been from Indian viewers?

PD: The response from viewers has been phenomenal and we are overwhelmed at the positivity and appreciation that each show has received from audiences across India. Social networking sites are abuzz with praise for the shows. It’s been a month since the launch and all characters in the shows have already become household names.

Question: Is there a possibility of including more Pakistani TV shows?

PD: Definitely, a key feature of Zindagi is that the shows we run are of finite duration with 20-25 episodes in each series; mostly adapted from well-known novels. We launched Zindagi with a promise of launching new shows every month. The channel was launched on June 23, 2014 and we have already started two new shows —Maat andNoorpur Ki Rani in place ofZindagi Gulzar Hai andAunn Zara. In the coming months, we will showcase many more of the widely acclaimed Pakistani shows of recent times.

Question: One month into the launch, what do the initial ratings say about Pakistani TV shows? Are advertisers showing interest?

PD: We are yet to receive the ratings.

Question: How long did it take Zeel to launch the channel? When was the initial agreement made?

PD: It took us two years to launch this channel. In this time, we did extensive research across cities in India where not only the content purchased but also the original soundtracks were tested to get audience feedback. The team watched nearly 4,000 hours of content to zero down on the right mix of shows that were culturally suitable to Indian sentiments. We met eminent TV personalities and broadcasters across the world (from Pakistan, Egypt, Latin America, Middle East and Turkey) to get the best stories for this channel.

Question: What has been the reaction for Indian drama producers?

PD: We have been receiving overwhelming support and response from Indian television industry as well as Bollywood. The simplicity with which everything is portrayed on screen, the great talent, awesome scripts and music have been the talk of the industry since the day Zindagi has launched.

It does not tire to repeat that the serials on Zindagi have been roundly appreciated and enjoyed across the diff sections of people. It may be going too far when I say that the tagline of the channel 'Jodey Dilon Ko' is actually helping to destroy the tunneled vision and stereotyped perspective of the Pakistani society and may really live upto the tagline, but i feel it will surely achieve the objective of joining hearts at least to a certain extent. Irrespective of the religious background, the content is being directly related to and feels very much similar and very much familiar to the Indian context. It feels like watching the milieu in an Indian context and setting.Hope there would be more collaboration between the countries to share the similar cultural roots. Let's not allow ourselves or bird-brained others who have a very parochial view about each other's people and society to drape wool onto our eyes and minds. It might help in resolving the problems at the national level with some logic. Thanks to Zee and kudos to the Pak producers and actors.

These pak shows are awesome. I watch them along with my mother, who loves them so much. They are a welcome change from the indian soaps. These shows have also changed my view of pak society. Instead of the common view in india about pakistan, where people are over-religious and ultraconservative, I can see how our cultures have so much in common, that we have the same struggles against poverty, corruption, ignorance, evil and selfishness. The serials offer a splendid glimpse into the lives of the common people and their pathos. The actors are terrific and the direction is realistic and mature. I would love to see more of pak tv shows. For the people of pakistan who want to catch such a side of india, please watch malgudi days.

@anser First thing Urdu is Indian Language.use of Persian,Arabic or English word is permitted in Hindi in the same way as it use of Sanskrit and Prakrit. The language you proudly claim Urdu has more more than 70% of Hindi-Sanskrit-Prakrit vocabulary(it has only 1100 in its dictionary) and more than 70% of its grammar is Hindi.for Example :- "main gata hun","raat ho gayi" "mujhey Bhut lagi hai" "mai likh raha hun" which of the word used and which part of grammer in these sentence is not derived from Sanskrit-Prakrit-Hindi.I will be happy to answer in next comment if you find one.Problem with Pakistani is they don't know what Sanskrit and Prakrit is and they think urdu is Persian language because use of Persian word in it.I wonder one day they will declare Hindi an European language becaues of the amount of English we are using in Hindi these days.

My favorite TV program was "Setamevijata".If they happen to like something from east of their border that is great. Why should this be a one way street. We learn from you, you learn from us. Nothing pleases us more than see you do well. We hope you share the sentiment. While we are at it, let us open the borders wider for reform, ideas, trade and so forth.

@M.Saeed Yes, Urdu and Hindi script are totally different. The spoken Urdu and modern Hindi sound similar but "Pronunciation" of native Hindi speakers and native Urdu speakers are distinct, compare the language of majority of Indians and Pakistanis. When in Bollywood dramas actors/actresses speak pure Hindi, I find it difficult to understand. Any way these two similar languages, at least spoken, always bring Indians and Pakistanis closer wherever they meet in this world.

It is true that Zindgi channel has brought freshness and a change to the viewing public in the country. I enjoyed watching Zindgi Gulzar Hai and Aun Zara but that was all. The pattern of all other serial dramas is same and the story is woven around a few family members with out much difference. I believe every channel has a master piece to show case around. zindgi----- Hai was that type. The others are same routine stuff with depressive social issues being shown again and again in every other serial. Hopefully we find some change in the forthcoming serials. If that is no so, it will be a disappointment and the interest in these serials will wane away with time. I do not wish so , so hopefully there is a turn around and interest initially created in these drama serials is revived again.

@Prashant my friend it must be hard for you to believe this, but there are not as many burkhas in pakistan as you have come to expect due to the myopic projections of Pakistan by your media (its true and you know it) Although, that is not to say that a Burkha is a bad thing. Muslims perceive it as a sign of respect for women and it helps protect them from the barbaric and vile urges of men. For example, .. women with bold clothing will always be more at risk of harassment and rape. Case in point: USA, and now sadly India too. As far as the face covering is concerned, that is a choice but the majority of women dress modestly without facial hijabs. (again, stating fact and not giving an opinion whether its good or bad).

Content wise, Music, depth Pakistan TV Dramas are just excellent. This is real Pakistan, mainstream Pakistan. I hope Indians like it and enjoy it. I hope that reduces their animosity, hatred towards Pakistan.

Whey there too much of debate on whose drama and movies are good? See what you like and don't see what you don't just as simple. If Indian like any PAKI drama or movie they will enjoy in cinema halls and at home, same way as PAKI enjoy Indian movies and serials. It's useless of seeing the films/drama at back and commenting something against at front.
