The shield was a component of the arms of the LeewardIslands. In 1960 a motto was added to the shield, to makethe arms of the Virgin Islands. Between 1956, whenthe federation of the Leeward Islands was dissolved, and 1960when the arms of the Virgin Islands were granted, some flags mayhave been produced with the shield but no motto.

The British Virgin Islands had started their participationsome days before the opening of the Olympic Winter Games inSarajevo, 1984 .Unfortunately, the organizer could not produce anofficial Blue Ensign. Therefore, the regulators used a whitecloth with the blue inscription "B.DJEVIC`'ANSKAOSTRVA" in Serbo-Croatian language in the Latin alphabetwith the Olympic rings the second line. One could see this flagon the events of the opening and the conclusion of the XIVOlympic Winter Games as seen in thisphoto.
