 | The Nightingale family burial site is at theChurch of St. Margaret in East Wellowor Wellow very near the family estate of Embley Park. The church was founded in 1215, the year of the signing of the Magna Carta. It is a small building, holding around 100 people, but rich in architectural interest. Resting in one of the windows was the Scutari Cross, made of bullets from the Crimea, and beside it a framed text which was hanging in Florence Nightingale's bedroom when she died. (The cross was stolen in 1991 and is replaced by a fiberglass replica.) There is a four sided monument in the churchyard with inscriptions on each side for thefour family members. For FN's mother: For FN's father: FN's sister Parthenope Frances Nightingale has an inscription composedby FN upon the death of her sister but Parthenope who by marriage tookon the name of her husband Harry Verney and was thereafter called "LadyVerney." She is buried at the Verney family estate Claydon. On the fourth side is a small cross with the letters "F. N." and thewords "Born 1820. Died 1910." | |
