san organisation where the emphasis is on creating a secular societywhere religion is regarded as a private matter.
tsemphasis is strongly against sectarianism and religious indoctrinationof children, it is also against state-funding of religious schools.Although the State pays the lion's share of the costs, religiousinstitutions have a huge influence over the running of these schoolswhich use their position to indoctrinate children with their relevantdoctrines. .
heSociety also considers that religious schools are a divisive force inour multi-cultural society. It is convinced that the best - andsometimes the only - time for those of all races and backgrounds tolearn about and to live peaceably with each other is during theirperiod at school.
hegovernment is eager to increase commitment to religious inputthroughout the curriculum. It has even promised to increase in thenumber of religious schools, especially secondary ones,
therareas in which the NSS is active is on the Human Rights issues involvedin compulsory worship, and supporting wherever possible teachers andpupils who object to religious pressure in whatever form it takes.
talso campaigns at National and European level on improve the positionof non-religious teachers (who are discriminated against under theSchool Standards and Framework Act 1998), and it is active in trying touphold the rights of parents who feel discriminated against by thecurrent privileged position of religion in education.
heNSS is a campaigning body and does not have the advantage of charitystatus, and is therefor at a considerable disadvantage, compared to thechurches when it comes to promoting its cause, in this and the manyother secular issues.

          ATHEISM

AtheismUK is a relatively new organisation that asserts positiveatheism andIS against allworship in schools as aninfringement of children's rights, the censorship of atheist views andperspectives on religion in schools, its false claims and the promotionof opinion and mythology as fact as 'education', the suppression ofchildren's critical thinking - of which this is a prime example and thebiased teaching of religion as 'good', despite the evidence of historyand current events. hereappear to be two main thrusts of policy with regard to Humanism andeducation.
hefirst is an emphasis on the teaching of morality and ethics, outside ofa religious context, which is bound to be important as fewer peoplebelieve in religions and gods. 'Morality Without Religion'is aparticular theme of humanism.
hesecond is the inclusion of Humanism along with other teaching ofcomparative religion.

heBritish Humanist Association, the Humanist Society of Scotland andAssociation of Irish Humanists are particularly relevant with regard tothe educational issues as there are differences in the law, particularly in Scotland.
salready noted on other pages the Humanist Organisations have done a lotof work trying to effect change through the local authority andpolitical structures, particularly SACES (See 'SACRES' Item Later) andby promoting their views at local and national level. To date, theirefforts have not been rewarded by significant changes in theseinstitutions, because of the entrenched position of the people who makeup these bodies, church nominations and politicians who are religious,or wary of alienating the religious vote.
hisorganisation does not represent all humanists, many members of the NSSare also humanists. It has an education discussion forum which is opento members and only by invitation from their education officer.
orteachers and schools for who wish to avoid the worst aspects ofreligion in schools, the BHA has produced support material and draftsyllabuses when asked.
