Remnants of the Broad Gauge.

Despite the broad gauge era finishing close to 120 years ago, many buildings and structures which were part of its everyday railway operation have survived; some of them still doing the job they were designed for - others with a complete change of use.

Aware that things can disappear very quickly, at the turn of the century, the Society embarked on its 'Millennium Project'.  In this, members were encouraged to help catalogue information about the hundreds of remaining original broad gauge items.

While one aim was to record the details of these works on behalf of future historians and modellers, it was also to provide an opportunity to identify structures which are particularly worthy of conservation, or possible protection.

Although the BGS is not a campaigning organisation, there are times when our knowledge, particularly of relevant history, can perhaps help to save buildings and other artifacts that are threatened with destruction.

One such instance was High Wycombe station, once a unique terminus of the broad gauge.  Through the particular diligence of one BGS member, the original broad gauge buildings which were threatened with demolition were granted Grade 2 listed status.  Recent development work at the site did not really include this building; but we hope this may have made a difference, and shall report on any positive developments at Wycombe.

Many of the recorded locations form locations that are visited as part of BGS Annual BGS Field Trips.

A possible future project may be to include these items on an interactive map available to members.

Examples of some original broad gauge structures are listed in the adjacent column on this page.
