Campbell-Stokes recorder
This instrument uses a spherical glass lens to focus the image of the sun on to a specially designed card, which is scorched when the sunlight intensity exceeds a pre-determined threshold. The total length of the burn trace is proportional to the number of hours when the sunshine was sufficiently bright to burn the card.
