Vallenato singer/songwriter Martín Elías died in car accident on Friday (April 14). The Colombian artist was 26 years old.

The accident happened during the early hours of the morning while Elías was on his way to Valledupar, a northern city of Colombia. He had performed at a music festival the night before.

Elías was considered a pioneer in the new wave of vallenato music in Colombia, following in the footsteps of his father, the iconic folk singer/songwriter Diomedes Díaz, who died in 2013.
