What is Advent?
Advent is an important part of the Christian calendar. It means 'coming' and it's the period before Christmas which celebrates the birth of Jesus. It is all about preparing for Christmas Day. Advent starts on the Sunday nearest to 30th November - four weekend's before Christmas.
So in 2025, advent starts onMonday 1st December and will be observed untilWednesday 24th December.
An advent calendar marks off each day with a door or compartment, with a smallsurprise inside like a picture, chocolate or a small gift. It can be observed by Christians and non-Christians alike.
