The "Elseworlds" series took existing comic characters and rewrote them in different settings and "what if..." situations.Nine Lives is a 1940's-style story that follows private investigator Dick Grayson's investigation into the murder of Selina Kyle, and his dealings with some of the most dangerous men in Gotham (including the Batman).

The Batmobile used in the story features retractable armor, so that under normal conditions it appears to be a stock "boat tail" Auburn coupe. Once activated, the mask, rear fin, fender skirts, and glass armor extend from hidden panels, protecting the car and its occupants.
