Most researchers agree that the nameBARNEY camefrom the small town of Berney (pronounced "Barney," and usuallyspelled Barney today) in Norfolk Co., England. Many have said the name isNorman, possibly derived from the norse BJARNE, meaning "Bear". The , founded byWilliamC. Barney in 1979, now has over 400 members, mostly in the United Statesand Canada, but also in Mexico, Colombia, Australia and England.
