Un avataq est un flotteurservant à la chasse traditionnellefait d’une seule peau dephoque. Toutes les partiesd’un avataq ont un nomparticulier en inuttitut. L’avataqest fermé par des bouchonsde bois aux extrémités. Si lapeau a des trous, on peutboucher ces trous avec depetits bouchons en ivoire faitssur mesure que l’on appelle «uaqtaq ».L’avataq est relié au harpon età la pointe du harpon par unecorde faite également en peaude phoque. On appelle cettecorde un « iparaq ».Un avataq permet de maintenirà flot la prise du chasseurou sert de balise pour localisersous l’eau un mammifèremarin qui a été harponné.

An avataq is a traditionalhunting float made of onecomplete sealskin. All parts ofan avataq have specificnames in Inuttitut. The avataqis fitted with wooden plugs onits ends. Any holes in the skinmay be plugged with custommadeivory plugs called"uaqtaq".The avataq is attached toa harpoon and harpoon headby a sealskin line called an"iparaq".An avataq keeps a hunter'scatch afloat, or serves asa marker for locatinga submerged sea mammalwhich has been harpooned.
