At the Anthony Caro Centre we currently have a display of works on show, focussing on the radical development of Caro’s sculpture from the 1950s through to the late 1960s. This was a prolific period of making and experimentation, marked by a pivotal breakthrough in 1960 that saw Caro take sculpture off the plinth and begin constructing abstract works in found, brightly painted steel, and then in 1966 a new form of small scale sculpture, the table piece, informed by conversations with critic Michael Fried. The exhibition includes rarely seen figurative early works in bronze, as well as some of Caro’s most renowned sculptures from the 1960s. In 1959 Caro travelled to The United States of America on a trip funded by the Ford Foundation. During this career changing trip, he met the Colour Field painters Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell and Kenneth Noland, as well as the renowned abstract metal sculptor David Smith.
