Upscaling

Upscaling is the process of converting a standard definition (SD) video signal to a seemingly high-definition (HD) video signal by using a video scaler to match the pixel count of the signal to the physical pixel count on aHDTV or Monitor. UpscalingDVD players are becoming increasingly popular, viewed by many consumers as a cheap way to view HD content. Of course, upscaling does not convert standard definition video to true high definition video at all, but it can dramatically improve the detail and color consistency of the picture.

Some DVD playing software likeWinDVD andPowerDVD have upscaling functions forDVD-Video. Upscaling is highly recommended for fixed-pixel displays like LCD or Plasma, whereas there is improvement, but not on the same level, using CRT displays. Depending on the hardware, signals of720p,1080i or even1080p can be produced.
