The following is a sampling of errors contained in various editions of theCollier's Encyclopedia. Additional information on each error correction can be found by clicking on the link at the beginning and/or end of each entry below.
Truman Capote (writer) - Some editions erroneously report he died "Aug. 26, 1984."
Correction: He actually died August 25th, 1984, at 12:21 p.m., at 400 St. Cloud Road, in Bel Air, Los Angeles, California. ConsultTruman Capote's profile for more information.
William Faulkner (writer) - Some editions mistakenly claim he died in "Oxford, Mississippi."
Correction: Oxford certainly is where he lived and spent most of his life, but he died more than 60 miles away at Wright's Sanitarium, in Byhalia, Mississippi.
Althea Gibson (athlete) -Collier's Encyclopedia Yearbook 1957 erroneously statesshe was born in "New York City in 1928."
Correction: While Ms. Gibson was certainlyraised in Harlem, New York, she wasnot born there. She was born August 25th, 1927, at 9:00 a.m., in Silver, South Carolina, U.S.A.
Senator Barry Goldwater (U.S. Senator) - Some editions erroneously report "Jan. 1, 1909" as his date of birth.
Correction: This is one error that is perfectly understandable. Not only did nearly every reference source on the planet report the same erroneous date of birth, but Barry Goldwaterhimself reported January 1st as his date of birth in his various autobiographies and other books because he truly believed that it was his actual date of birth. Late in life, Senator Goldwater learned he was actually born at 3 a.m., on January2nd, 1909. Additional biographical data can be found in our profile ofSenator Goldwater.
Katharine Hepburn (actress) - Some editions erroneously report "Nov. 9, 1909" as her date of birth.
Correction: Ms. Hepburn was born May 12th, 1907, at 5:47 p.m., at 22 Hudson Street, in Hartford, Connecticut. Visit our biography ofKatharine Hepburn for additional in-depth information.
Heinrich Himmler (Nazi German war criminal) - Some editions mistakenly list "Nov. 7" as his date of birth.
Correction: Heinrich Himmler was born October 7th.
