Well, it was a game that will be remembered for one moment.

No prizes for guessing which one.

But all in all, that was a fantastic performance from the Matildas, and one that, for me anyway, signals that the Joe Montemurro era has well and truly begun.

We hope to catch you back here on Tuesday night, when the Matildas conclude their two-match series against New Zealand in Adelaide.

It will be Australia's final hit-out before hosting the Asian Cup in March.

Until then, go well!

Montemurro not entirely content with 'dominant' performance

Matildas boss Joe Montemurro is speaking to Paramount Plus - and while he's clearly happy with tonight's performance, he believes there is still plenty of room for improvement.

"We've set our standards very high because we know the expectations on this team are very, very high," Montemurro says.

"I think tonight showed that even with the pressure of expectation we were able to do some good things.

"We still need to fix up some things - there's some things I'm not happy about, but all in all a dominant performance."

When pressed about what he thinks can be improved, he says he reckons his side can be more solid against the counterattack.

"New Zealand did give us a few problems with the wide players sort of catching us on the break," Montemurro says.

"We came out to be a lot more aggressive and that's why we got caught a couple of times.

"You have to play that game...if you want to be a little bit more proactive, sometimes you leave yourself exposed.

"Two times in the first half and a couple times in the second half we did exposed - we probably have to better with."

While that's undoubtedly true - this game feels like a big moment for Montemurro's Matildas, who were fluid and expressive like we hadn't seen them before.

Not a bad effort

Great win for the Matildas in their penultimate game of the year which definitely bodes well for us less than a hundred days out from the Women's Asian Cup on home soil, and how good for Kyra Cooney-Cross to score a screamer that will no doubt be in contention for the Marta Award again.

Carpenter reflects on 'really great team performance'

Ellie Carpenter was responsible for one of a number of standout performances for the Matildas tonight.

The right back is speaking to Paramount Plus and is echoing what we've been saying all night - that this was her side's best performance of the Joe Montemurro era.

"Tonight was a really great team performance," Carpenter says.

"We said at half time we wanted to convert a little bit more, be a little bit more clinical in the final third and I think we definitely did in the second half."

And she believes her side has finally got the swing of Montemurro's fluid, expressive style of play.

Good signs for the upcoming Asian Cup.

"I think you could see tonight it was a solid team performance and we're really understanding the style of play," Carpenter says.

"That's a credit to the team implementing the style of play on the pitch...that's gonna give us a lot of confidence."

What a performance from Australia - the best of the Joe Montemurro era.

Kyra Conney-Cross's stunning long-range effort is the obvious highlight, while Ellie Carpenter and Katrina Gorry also found the back of the net in the second half.

Hayley Raso and Caitlin Foord were typically tenacious in the forward third, harrying and hassling the New Zealand backline while conjuring a fair few moments of inspiration of their own.

However - you could make the case that the scoreline is a little harsh on the Kiwis.

They were much improved in the second half, forcing Mackenzie Arnold into a couple sharp saves.

But, at the end of the day, it's a dominant, promising win for Australia.

Her effort is well saved by Anna Leat, in the centre left of the goal!

The Matildas have a fifth!

And it's Katrina Gorry who finishes a lovely give-and-go to put the cherry on top of the icing on top of the cake.

Gorry charges into the penalty area, plays the ball to Holly McNamara, who gives it back to Gorry.

The midfielder toe pokes the ball home from the edge of the six yard box.

88' An Australian chance from the dead ball

New Zealand's Claudia Bunge is shown the first yellow card of the game and Australia has a chance from the dead ball.

Steph Catley stands over the ball on the left edge of the penalty area.

It's a good, floated cross from the left-footer and Winonah Heatley rises and makes contact her head.

But too much contact.

The ball flies over the bar.

Oh, and Remy Siemsen is on for Caitlin Foord.

83' McNamara lively off the bench

Substitute Holly McNamara has wasted no time in making her presence felt.

Her first involvement is rifling a shot into Anna Leat's side netting, before almost getting the right side of a goalmouth scramble.

Ellie Carpenter had rifled a shot towards goal, which was saved but not cleared. McNamara came racing in but the Kiwis got the ball away.

81' Changes galore for Australia

The game has settled down a touch after those two goals.

Joe Montemurro turns to his bench.

Clare Wheeler replaces the brilliant Kyra Cooney-Cross and Tameka Yallop comes on for Emily van Egmond.

Holly McNamara gets up top for the last 10 minutes in place of Caitlin Foord.

4-2-3-1 we can hear Joe Montemurro shout from the sideline.

WHAT A GOAL!

Take a bow, Kyra Cooney-Cross!

That is majestic from the silky central midfielder.

Straight from kick-off, the ball comes loose just past halfway.

Cooney-Cross gathers it, looks up, and spots Anna Leat off her line.

We've seen this film before.

Sure enough, the Arsenal player lets fly from just ahead of the centre circle and the ball flies into the back of the net.

Another magical moment from Australia's number 23.

The Matildas make it three!

The Matildas make the most of some more poor Kiwi defending.

Ellie Carpenter is on hand to rifle in a scuffed clearance and the right back has a well deserved goal.

68' Better from New Zealand in the second half

The Football Ferns haven't found the back of the net, but they have been much improved in this second half.

Their latest foray forward results in a corner, which is whipped in and bobbles up.

A Kiwi head makes contact but the ball bobbles wide.

64' Changes for the Matildas

Three changes for the Matildas!

Two forwards, in veteran Michelle Heyman and youngster Holly McNamara replace fellow attackers Hayley Raso and Amy Sayer, while Kaitlyn Torpey comes on for Courtney Nevin.

No sign of Sam Kerr on the touchline.

63' Matildas fashion another chance

The Matildas are once again building quickly through the middle before working the ball out wide, this time to Ellie Carpenter on the edge of the area.

The right back floats in a probing cross that is met by the head of Caitlin Foord.

The header is on target, but it's loopy and an easy take for Anna Leat in the Kiwi goal.

58' Great save from Arnold!

The Football Ferns have a rare raid into enemy territory courtesy of the consistently energetic Indiah-Paige Riley.

The ball pops up and falls kindly to Kelli Brown, who makes good connection with her volley from the edge of the area.

Mackenzie Arnold — who hasn't had a whole lot to do tonight — is down sharply and saving to her right.
