Thanks Mikey Dread. I think that is most likely the source of the 24th May date although I don't have any copies of TNS from 1968 myself. Thanks for confirming that the Decca PR sheet states 10 May 1968. I've never seen a promo sheet for this single (nor any other Genesis singles for that matter except for The Silent Sun) and its inclusion on here would be of interest to many I'm sure.

I guess the May 24th release date was sourced from The New Singles (TNS). The Decca PR sheet forA Winter's Tale supports the promo release date of May 10th.

Decca PR sheet quote:"A Winter's Tale is a tender and expressive ballad that builds up to a fine climax."

Does anyone know why the release date on here says 24 May 1968? The demo copies say 10 May 1968 and the few reviews that appeared for the single in the UK music papers all appeared in issues from that week (cover dated 11 May 1968). I've not come across anything that points to a two week delay to its appearance. So is this just a mistake or is there a source of information that offers proof?

Does anyone own, or have a scan of the solid centre UK demo version? Also, does anybody know of another example of the black label version, other than the one Dougal mentions?

 Hi Billy Two,
It isn't my copy unfortunately, but it does belong to a good friend of mine and unfortunately it is correct. I say unfortunately as it means there's another incredibly rare version of this already rare single to find!!
The label is black or a very dark navy blue.
There's a letter in this months Record Collector mag about this very label.
I see that there are also black Decca labels of The Rolling Stones 'Satisfaction' single, see:
https://www.45cat.com/record/f12220
Cheers

Black label ? Is this your own copy, Dougal ? Just wondering if it's a result of b/w scanning (apologies for doubting if it is yours !!)...

Love both sides of this single. Fortunately they're available on the"Rock Roots" LP which isn't difficult to find in their original and proper mono.

I own a perfect copy of the Australian 'A' promo with hard centre of this record. The record is M and the sleeve (only the Decca sleeve) is Ex++. I've been told there are only a couple in the world. If anybody is interested in a scan, i'll send one through to you. I'd be interested to know what the value is, however I'm not currently looking at selling. I've got stacks of other rare Genesis vinyl if anybody is interested in a chat/type one day. :-)

Sorry Billy T. Like Mickey D. Says It Will have to be the Tangerine Or a Bag of Nuts. He Is aware of the Site and says It Is a Good Reference. He Is Dropping the Label Scans In Here as Per My Instructions. So a New Entry can be Made and the Scans Moved there. (MODS Discretion). He might not have the Money It does Happen Fingers X. H.

Damn good try, Henry. I guess BT will have to make do with a tangerine in the bottom of his Crimbo stocking. : )

Is Mike a member of 45cat, or is he sending the scans to your good self ?

Yes, it's Chris Stewart on the far right.

TheJudge
6th Nov 2014
 a) Yes
b) If you mean the still for AWT, then (l.-r.) Ant Phillips, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, Peter Gabriel. I think the figure on the far right is Chris Stewart, the original drummer, although it could be a later shot with John Mayhew. I'm pretty sure it's not John Silver, who was drummer between times.

Is Peter Gabriel singing lead on both of these tracks? Which person in the "Winter's Tale" video still shot is Peter?

The A Winter’s Tale promo on the London label was discovered back in March 2009 and has been the subject of many discussions in the Genesis 7” collecting community. So many thanks Billy Two for posting the link to the similar Thin Lizzy release, very interesting.
The thing I find strange about the Genesis release in particular is how it eluded the collecting community for the best part of forty years!

Promo, or demonstration, copies of this record exist in both push out centre and full centre versions. The full centre version is extremely rare, I know of three copies, and interestingly the diameter of the full centre vinyl is about 5mm bigger than the more common push out centre version.

Honest Guv'nor - I found a demo copy of this in a New Cross hedge on my way home from school back in '72. We played frisbee with it in the street before I decide to shove it in my bag and take home for a listen. Though scratched up it still plays OK 40 years later.

The London export issue is actually listed in the RCPG 2012, so it's not atotally new find...

Though I'd still like one, let's be honest.

Seehere for a similar Decca-on-London issue for Thin Lizzy, though apparently three years later - it's even got the same handwritten ACC initials. What was it all about ???
