Hall of Fame

A standout multi-sport athlete, Gaviola’s all-conference recognition in three sports is a rarity in Bearcat athletics. His name was listed on the Willamette and NWC track record boards in 1958. He was First Team All-NWC in basketball in 1961, the second leading scorer in the conference, and was named to the All-NWC baseball team in 1960 and 1962. In a clutch performance, his 10 points in the four minutes of the championship game against Linfield in 1959, enabled Willamette to overcome a late nine-point deficit and win the NWC Championship. Beyond athletics, he lived overseas for 30 years as an educator in the DoDDS system in Puerto Rico, Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East as a high school teacher, counselor, and administrator.
