Springsteen on Oscars

Bruce Springsteen, nominated for an original-song Oscar for his “Streets of Philadelphia” from TriStar’s “Philadelphia,” makes his Oscarcast debut when he performs the tune on this year’s Academy Awards show. And he won’t be the only music legend there.

“The hope is to have all the original artists from the songs on the show,” said Oscar show producer Gilbert Cates, who made several other announcements regarding the March 21 show at a press conference Tuesday at the Acad’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Neil Young wrote and performed “Philadelphia” from the movie and has also committed to appear on the show.

Dolly Parton will sing “The Day I Fall in Love” from “Beethoven’s 2nd,” written byCarole Bayer Sager, James Ingram and Cliff Magness, which she performed with Ingram in the film.

The other nominated performers and songs Cates would like to add to the lineup are “Again” from “Poetic Justice,” which was performed by Janet Jackson, who co-wrote the music and lyrics with James Harris III and Terry Lewis; and “A Wink and a Smile” from “Sleepless in Seattle,” with music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Ramsey McLean, performed by Harry Connick Jr. in the pic.

Cates and the show’s choreographer, Debbie Allen, announced that the awards show will feature live performances by principal dancers from eight leading ballet companies in six-minute ballet set to the music of the five nominated scores –“The Age of Innocence,””The Firm,””The Fugitive,””The Remains of the Day” and “Schindler’s List.”

Participant dancers will be from Les Ballets Africains of the Republic of Guinea, the National Ballet of Canada, the Central Ballet of China, the Nacionale Ballet de Cuba, the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Garth Fagan Dance Inc., the Paris Opera Ballet and the Shagai Ballet Troupe.

“We’ve tried to bring an international flavor to the show starting with the last several years,” Cates said.

“It really started several years ago when we started filming some of the segments in different categories.”

Cates was asked if recently announced host Whoopi Goldberg had been given orders to change her act for the Oscar show.

“Not to my knowledge,” Cates said. “I think she’s going to be terrific. As far as giving orders, I haven’t given her any orders.”
