During 4/5 August 1944,USS Hawkbill (T/Cdr. F.W. Scanland, Jr., USN) andUSS Scabbardfish (T/Cdr. F.A. Gunn, USN) conducted exercises off Pearl Harbor withUSS Carlson (Lt.Cdr. J.A. Stapleton, USNR) andUSS Bebas (Lt.Cdr. J.R. Schweizer, USNR). These included night exercises.
