| Notes on event | At 02.00 hours on 15 July 1943 the unescorted and unarmedGilbert B. Walters (Master George Graham) was stopped byU-572 from astern with machine gun fire across her bow southeast of Trinidad. The eight crew members and three passengers abandon ship in two lifeboats as ordered by the Germans who then questioned them, asking about name, cargo and route. The U-boat then began shelling the schooner which sank after being hit by two rounds. One lifeboat made landfall at the east coast of Trinidad and the other landed on Tobago. | ||
