FIRST OREN
ICE RINK
HOBART, Mon. - Thousands
crowded into Australia's onl¡£^^^*
air ice skating rink, opened o^B^*
Premier (Mr. Cosgrove) at Moonan^
tb-night. For many it was their
first opportunity to skate on ice.
" A feature in the night's pro
gramme was the appearance oí
the Australian women's champion»
Gwen Molony, of Melbourne, wiro
won the Australian championship
in 1949 and 1950 and will repre
sent Australia at the international
championship at Helsinki in 1952.*
She featured some brilliant fancy
skating and wras paired in skating
versions of the waltz, fox trot and
tango as well as novelty items wit!»
Adrian Swan, Australian men's
champion, who also gave a demon
stration of acrobatic skating.
"The project will prove of great
benefit to the State and an .added
inducement to tourists," said Mr.
Cosgrove.
It differed from other Australian
rinks in that it was open-air, all ^
others in the Commonwealth being *
enclosed. The nearest open-air
rink to Australia was in Madison
Square Garden in New York.
It was of Olympic size, which
would enable dancing and ice-,
hockey championships to be staged "
and would provide Tasmanians andi
visitors hours of pleasure and en-,
tertainment.
MELBOURNE, Monday.-Geoff
rey Foyster (19), of Swan Hill, wn?1>
killed instantly when the semi-'
trailer truck he was driving failed
to take a bend on the Calder higi>
way, south of Gisborne, early to- ,
day.
