BRILLIANT TENNIS IN
NATIONAL TITLES
Singles Final Lies Between
Crawford and Quist
HOPMANS TAKE MIXED DOUBLES
By Dean Lasos
ADELAIDE. Saturday.
Brilliant tennis was provided ny J. urawiora ana. a. witst in tneir
respective matches against A. Kay (Victoria) and H. Hopman (Vic
toria) in tlie semi-finals of the Australian singles championship to-day.
Crawford at times was masterly, and won in straight sets, but Hopman
extended must, ins tour-set maicn lasting: over two nours. Hoprnans
display can be classed as the greatest of his career. Crawford and
Quist will meet in the final.
Hopman and Mrs. Hopman were successful in the mixed doubles
final, defeating Kay— Miss Blick 6-2, 6-0. Misses Blick and Woodward
defeated Mrs. Hopman— Miss Hartigan in the women's doubles semi
final, and the girls' junior singles final was won by Miss Coyne.
Reviewing the play the honours of
the day go to Hopman for the greatest
display of his career. But for Quist's
net-cord on a set-point in the third
set, Hopman may have entered the
final against Crawford, as he did here
four years ago. Newcombe and Miss
O'Halloran deserve great credit for
winning the junior mixed title, and
Newcombe's performance in the junior
doubles, partnered with Warhurst,
calls for mention. It was pleasing
to see Miss Coyne successful in the
Junior girls' event. In Misses Coyne,
Wynne, and Berryman Australia has
three wonderful players.
Harley Malcolm is available to man
age the Davis Cup team, and is very
likely to be chosen, in view of Turn
bull's decision r.ot to make the trip.
Although Kay played well against
Crawford, his display was not im
pressive enough to cause optimism re
garding the possibility of his being
selected for the Davis Cup.
THE SINGLES
The men's singles play opened with
the match between Quist and Hopman.
The former opened, and the game fol
lowed the service to 3-all. Neither
player was inclined to take liberties,
depending on his opponent's errors
rather than on placements. Quist led
4-3 and had three game points on
Hopman's service, only to see Hop
man reach deuce and eventually draw
level at 4-all. Hopman led 15-40 on
Quist's service, and broke through to
lead 5-4. Chopping heavily to Quist s
backhand, he took the next game for
the set at 6-4. At 15-30 in the next
game, Quist was footfaulted, and Hop
man broke through after six deuces
to lead 1-0. His heavy slices to Quist's
backhand had the latter worried, but
tightening up his game Quist took
Hopman's service to even the score.
Quist was in trouble and trailed 15-40
in the next,, but after nine deuces he
held to lead 2-1.
Play had improved considerably,
with Hopman playing the game of his,
life. He evened to 2-all, but Quist ;
went to 3-2 when Hopman made no,
attempt to play one of his returns. .
evidently thinking that his own stroke
had gone out. Beautiful placements
enabled Quist to break through and;
lead 4-2, and he went to 5-2 on nisi
service. Hopman outed two volleys;
In the next game to give Quist the i
second set, 6-2.
MARATHON SET
Quist commenced the third set well,
winning to love 'by a fine service, but
Hopman retaliated by also holding to
love, and then broke through Quist
without losing a point, to lead 2-1. He
could not hold the advantage, how
ever, and Quist evened to 2-all, after
which he followed his service to the
net and volleyed winners for 3-2. Hop
man levelled. After leading 5-4, Quist
had a set point and an easy shot, but
lobbed out, to allow Hopman to level
5-all. Sparkling play enabled Hop
man to take the lead at 6-5, and he
had a set-point game, but a lucky
net-cord by Quist brought the score
to deuce, and the South Australian
eventually broke through for 6-all.
Hopman in turn broke through after
four games points, to lead 7-6, but
once again Quist brought the scores
level, and got out of a game-point in
the next game to lead 8-7. Serving
with ferocity Hopman made it 8-all,
and twice had game-point in the next,
but Quist held him, and in the fol
lowing game broke through to win
the set 10-8.
Quist served in the first game of
the fourth set to win, and Hopman
levelled, despite two doubles. Another
five games went with the service,
then Quist took Hopman to a lead
5-3. The next game was the last, Quist
holding his service, after two deuces,
for the match.
CRAWFORD'S STINGING ATTACK
Crawford took Kay's service in the
opening game, but the latter broke
through, after a long game, to level
the score. A rally of 36 strokes
brought acclamation from the crowd.
Kay . held a long-service game, but
Crawford evened to 2-all, and broke
through for 3-2. Good services gave
him 40-love, but Kay, aided by a net
cord, went to deuce, only to lose,
Crawford leading 4-2. The champion
took Kay's service with sharply
angled drives, then, holding the next
game to love, took the first set 6-2.
Breaking through Kay, Crawford led
1-love in the second set, having won
14 successive points. He was now play
ing like a master, and took another
love game, but Kay then held to love
by good services, and looked like
evening at 3-all, when he led 15-40 on
Crawford's service; but four unplay
able services gave Crawford a lead of
4-2. Kay held him to love, and then
Crawford went to 5-3, but his play
slackened off appreciably, and Kay
drew level and led 6-5. Kay had a
set-point, but after a rally of 23 strokes
Crawford deuced, and then served
a double-fault, followed by an ace,
and won the next two points for the
game. 6-all. Kay served a long game
to lead 7-6, but -Crawford put more
power into his service and drew level,
then broke through to . lead 8-7, fin
ishing iOff the set with an ace. Craw
ford led' 2-16ve in the third set, and
then Kay took the game. But he took
only one other, Crawford attacking to
take the set 6-2, and the match.
MRS. HOPMAN— MISS HARTIGAN
GO DOWN
Misses Blick and Woodward put up
a good performance to defeat Miss
Hartigan and Mrs. Hopman with the
loss of only six games, thus jiving
merit to the performance of the
Queenslanders, Misses Hardcastle and
Sterne, in extending the winners to
7-5 in the third set in the earlier
round.
Bromwich reached the ftoal of the
junior singles, defeating Llndo 6-2, 6-3
in a good match. He will meet Hux
ley in the final, the latter having
eliminated Gilchrist in the other semi
final. Huxley's singles game is im
proving, and he may win.
Max Newcombe and Gwen O'Hallo
ran (South Australia) annexed the
junior mixed doubles title, recording
a meritorious win over Bromwich and
Miss Colless in the final. The New
South Wales pair took the first set,
but could muster only three games
in the next two.
Miss Coyne started well against
Miss Berryman in the girls' singles
final, and although the players were
together at 3-all she forged ahead to
take the set 6-3. The second set saw
Miss Berryman advance her game an
other stage, and after a long struggle
she broke through in the twelfth game
'or the set. Miss Coyne had a win
itag street in the third set to lead
1-0. Then Miss Berryman won her
service, but Miss Coyne took the next
same for 5-1. Miss Berryman again
won, but Miss Coyne had a match
xiint on her service. Miss Berryman
saved with a forcing drive, but her
opponent held a second match-point.
Miss Berryman saved again, only to
lose the next point, and Miss Coyne
iook the match and the title with a
pacy forehand drive.
