LAWN TENNIS.
Americans Compete.
AUSTRAL.AN CHAMPIONSHIPS.
MELBOURNE, Friday.
After arriving in Melbourne at 2 o'clock this
afternoon from Sydney, the Americans, H E
Vines and K Gledhill, went straight to Koo-
yong to compete in the Australian tennis cham
pionships, which were begun to-day.
On account of a leg Injury, Mrs. Harper
withdrew from the women's doubles, and Miss
J. Hartigan, who also has an Injured leg, may
not be able to fulfil her engagements.
In the singles L. Hancock (Queensland)
served well against Crawford and made many
fine back-hand returns. He played his best
tennis In the third set when he won four
successive games, gaining many of his points
with shots down the lines. Crawford had
good control of all his shots.
Freak (S.A.) played Impressively against
Hopman, driving with good length. He did
better when he slowed up his game, but Hop-
man made many telling returns when the
pace increased. M. Weston give a good dis-
play against McGrath and took the second
set after forcing the international to advantage
in the first. McGrath made many errors
early, but his game later showed more pur-
pose. Weston served well and In the last
rubber both players put plenty of force into
their strokes.
R. E. Henry, a New South Wales Junior,
displayed good style against Quist (S.A.). He
drove and served well, but Quist, by his
accuracy, won each set but only by the narrow-
est margins. D. Chrystal (N.S.W.) showed
great concentration and persistency against
R. O. Cummings (Queensland), and their
rubber was chiefly a baseline duel.
Vines and Gledhill (U.S.A.) were not ex-
tended in their first two sets in the doubles
against Weston and Ennis (Vic), but the Vic-
torians led 4-1 In the third by placements.
The Americans equalised the scores. Weston
and Ennis had two set points at 5-4, out
twice they failed. Tonkin and Purcell had
a close call when they were opposed to
Schwartz (S.A.) and Henry (N.S.W.).
Only one match in the women's singles went
to the full number of sets, and 39 games
were played before Misses N. Hall (N.S.W.)
and J. Hoddle Wrigley (Vic.) won from Misses
N. and A. T. Lewis.
