Publisher's summary[]
Wedge Antilles is a combat-hardenedX-wing pilot, one of the only fliers to survive the missions against bothDeath Stars. After those two assignments and his post as leader ofRogue Squadron, you'd think he'd seen everything. But when he heads a rescue and retrieval for a downed man on the planetCilpar, he finds something he'd never expected: a culture that hates theEmpire... and hates theAlliance even more!
Plot summary[]
On the unaligned agricultural planetCilpar, Wedge Antilles and the rest of Rogue Squadron engage in an intense dogfight with twelveImperialTIE fighters attempting a stop a food convoy bound forMrlsst. After executing a trick move to eliminate two TIEs,Wes Janson'sX-Wing is damaged and is forced to land by a creek on the surface. The rest of the team lands west of the cityKiidan asTycho Celchu heads after Janson.[3]
Antilles discusses the state of the war withDllr Nep andIsplourrdacartha "Plourr" Estillo, the latter of which suspects Janson or Celchu of being an Imperialspy. At the creek bed, Celchu rescues Janson from his downed fighter just before it explodes, though Janson'sleg is broken. The two take shelter in a nearby cave, where Celchu fights off native winged creatures while nursing Janson to health.[3]
Back at the rebel hideout, Antilles and Plourr are confronted byElscol Loro and herteam. Loro suspects that theNew Republic and the Empire (under localMoffBoren Tascl) are working together to usurp the legitimate government on Cilpar and takes the rebels toTamarack, a once-thriving neighborhood ruined by the ongoingwar. As they recover the hanged body ofGates Harnik, a grocer who had supplied the rebels, Loro explains her suspicions, elaborating that her organization had a rebel contact that knew their location when Moff Tascl attacked. Loro ordersChang tocremate the found bodies before they are eaten by wildronks.[3]
Someone who appears to beLeia Organa discovers Celchu and Janson at the cave and holds them at gunpoint. At Tamarack, Loro explains to Antilles that herWookiee companionGroznik owed a life debt to her late husbandThrom after he saved the Wookiee from Imperial execution; Throm died at theBattle of the Cliffs after returning to liberate Cilpar, leaving Groznik with Loro. Antilles gave a story of his own, retelling his assault on thesecond Death Star at theBattle of Endor. Loro uncovers amusic ball in the ruins of her home and Nep identifies the tune as"Starlight by Moonlight". Suddenly, a cavalcade of Imperial walkers led by Moff Tascl storms the neighborhood.[3]
