Asublight engine, also called asublight drive, was a vitalstarship component used to drive ships throughrealspace at speeds less than the speed of light; the most common form of sublight drive was theion engine, which theTIE fighter used two of to achieve its incredible speeds.
The usual speeds achieved by sublight drive were quite substantial, amounting to a respectable fraction of the speed of light. Afreighter-sized vessel propelled by sublight drive could clear theatmosphere of aplanet and itsgravity well in a matter of minutes.
Themost common sublight drive was produced byHoersch-Kessel Drive, Inc., and found in vessels ranging from theT-16 skyhopper to theImperial-class Star Destroyer.Durafly also produced sublight drives.
