"This is a dangerous situation, Your Highness. Our security volunteers will be no match against a battle-hardened Federation army."
―Panaka, to Queen Amidala[1]

TheRoyal Naboo Security Forces, shortened asRoyalSecurity Forces, or abbreviated asRNSF andRSF, were the premierline of defense for both theTheed Royal Palace and the citizens ofNaboo. A peaceful people, theNaboo retained onlysecurity officers and guards rather than a true military organization.

Description[]

Organization[]

"The Royal Security Forces protect the Royalty of Naboo and the sector from pirates and Rebels. Their headquarters is in the capital city of Theed."
Trehla Keelo, to a spacer[5]

The Royal Naboo Security Forces included thePalace Guard, theSecurity Officer, and theSecurity Guard; theSpace Fighter Corps was another unit. Local law enforcement answered to the civilian authorities rather than the Head of Security.[6] Security Forces were divided into operational units, including theRoyal Security Police Force,[7] theRoyal Marine Regiment,[8] theRSF Intelligence Division[9] and the Naboo Planetary Defense.[10]

RSF were made up of volunteers and professionals, and was split into a number of factions:

  • Palace Guard: Highly trained bodyguards stationed in theTheed Royal Palace who acted as bodyguards to the king or queen, or even the senator. Though few in number, the Palace Guards were the backbone of the Security Forces. They wore sleek combat helmets and red blast-dampening vests and carriedS-5 heavy blaster pistols.[6] After the Battle of Naboo, they wore darker uniforms.
  • Security Officers: The top leaders of the Security Forces, these men and women were loyal yet mostly unfamiliar to true danger. They were the paid officers who worked under the captain of Security.[6] Roughly 1,000 in number prior to theClone Wars, they led the part-time and volunteer soldiers. They often were armed with compact, royalsporting blaster pistols and were protected by leather jerkins over a blue officer's coat. After the Battle of Naboo, they wore darker uniforms, with a different distribution of red and blue.
  • Security Guard: Naboo's equivalent to a regular infantry and to police officers, who served as patrolmen and sentries in Theed. They were large in number during theBattle of Naboo and firedS-5 heavy blaster pistols and the powerpackedCR-2 heavy blaster pistols and were trained by Captain Panaka.[6] They wore flexible armor plates over a dull yellow jumpsuit. During the reign ofQueenApailana, they wore leather vests over red jumpsuits, blending them with the Palace Guards. After the Battle of Naboo, they wore darker uniforms.
  • Fighter Pilots: Skilled space pilots operating in and around theNaboo system. This corps included the famedBravo Flight and fought inN-1 starfighters.[6] They wore long orange overcoats for warmth in space and flying helmets with visors. After the Battle of Naboo, they wore darker uniforms, and a new type of helmet.
  • Queen's Honor Guard: A group of pilots who escorted the monarch when away from Naboo.[11]
  • Grenadier: Grenadiers were soldiers who were trained to use grenades.[12]
  • Naboo Royal Navy: The aquatic naval forces of the Security Force. They had a base near the city ofSpinnaker.[13]
  • Engineers: Personnel within the Royal Naboo Security Forces who were responsible for maintaining various vehicles and vessels on Naboo. They wore yellow jumpsuits and helmets that bore their first names inFuthork as their uniforms.

During theGalactic Civil War, the Royal Naboo Security Forces were known to use at least seven distinctive ranks following theBattle of Yavin in0 BBY.[14]

History[]

Early history[]

TheRoyal Naboo Security Forces existed after67 BBY on theplanetNaboo.CaptainMaris Magneta was the head of the force underKingArs Veruna.[2] Magneta resigned after Veruna's mysteriousdeath and was replaced byQuarsh Panaka, who initiated tighter security procedures forQueenAmidala, including training herhandmaidens.[6] The members often got off-world experience, but returned out of loyalty to serve.[15] The Security Forces were stationed in the mainhangar inTheed, thecapitalcity.

The Battle of Naboo[]

Captain Panaka served as the head of the Naboo Security Forces during the Invasion of Naboo.

Captain Panaka served as the head of the Naboo Security Forces during the Invasion of Naboo.

The Security Forces were forced into their first real battle against the organization called theTrade Federation in32 BBY, and fought valiantly, yet in vain, against itsbattle droid legions during theInvasion of Naboo.[16] The Federation detained them in prison camps until some were freed byLieutenantGavyn Sykes, while survivors formed a portion of theresistance.[3] The Federation established their own patrols on the planet. Queen Amidala and Captain Panaka rallied the troops upon their return to Naboo, and were able to capture the Federation's leader,ViceroyNute Gunray, and end the droid occupation.[1] The Security Forces continued to protect Naboo following these battles, though adopted many increased security measures during theSeparatist Crisis[17] and the eventualClone Wars.

Clone Wars[]

Around22 BBY,[18]Supreme ChancellorPalpatine arrived back on Naboo for theFestival of Light. The Security Forces established a defensive position around the Chancellor's Podium, but a team ofbounty huntersmanaged to abduct the Chancellor. He was successfully rescued by theJedi KnightAnakin Skywalker.[19]

Around that time, theELG-3A blaster pistol was a standard-issueblaster aboard all RSF ships, including theirbattleships.[20]

The rise of the Empire[]

The Security Forces had to show their determination when theGalactic Empire became the new galactic order. In19 BBY, the security guards, along with some Gungans, attacked the Imperial garrison inTheed. The object of the attack was to stop InquisitorMalorum from transmitting a vital secret. Ultimately,ex-JediFerus Olin killed the Inquisitor in thePlasma Refinery Complex, while the Royal Naboo Security Forces and theGungan Grand Army achieved the victory in the city and in theImperial garrison. To hide the attack an illegal weapons cache in the Theed Hangar was detonated.[21]

However, peace for the security forces was short-lived. Naboo's then queen,Apailana, had been housingJedi runaways fleeing from the Empire'sGreat Jedi Purge at her own risk. When it was ordered that Apailana be executed fortreason, the Empire had prepared its elite501st Legion ofstormtroopers. The Security Forces tried their best to hold off the 501st during what was later called theFall of Naboo. However, theRoyal Palace was soon besieged. The Naboo forces were quickly beheaded without a strong leader like Panaka had once been. Auto-turrets were shut down and the grid console destroyed. Most of the security and palace fighters met their dooms. At last, Apailana was assassinated in the royal plaza in the midst of the battle, allegedly by anImperial sharpshooter, according to the Empire's account.[22]

The Royal Naboo Security Forces were at last defeated, and most of the remaining survivors loyal to Apailana were quietly arrested and transported to the secretDeath Star detention centers.[22]

During theImperial Period, the Royal Naboo Security Forces owned aMon Calamari Star Cruiser, theRNSQueen Amidala IV.[23]

The Galactic Civil War[]

The Queen'sRoyal Guard (established for the following queen,Kylantha) took the place of the once-experienced Royal Naboo Security Forces, who were relegated to being a type of police force. Rather than having many branches as the old security forces, the Royal Guard was made up of only a select few bodyguards whom the monarch knew personally. While the RSF continued as a small police force, protection of Naboo and its systems was mainly performed by the Imperialstormtroopers until the rise of theNew Republic.

Sometime after theBattle of Yavin, the weakened RSF police force had severe problems with the many criminal gangs that had swamped the planet after the rise of the Empire. At that time, the four major criminal organization on Naboo were theSkaak Tippers,Borvo the Hutt'scriminal empire, theDarkwalkers and theMummers.[9] Furthermore, other criminal groups included theNaboo pirates,[24] theMaulers,[25] thePeddlers,[26] theMuskegs,[27] and theMountaintop smugglers.[28] With little help from the Imperial garrison, the RSF had lost the grip on the overwhelming criminal activity. Fortunately, they were able to enlist the help of groups of unidentified travelers, whose assistance enabled the Security Forces to put a stop to many gang-related crimes.Quarsh Panaka would on occasion delegate missions to the agents of the RSF,[29] as wouldPooja Naberrie.[30]

In1 ABY,[31] a spacer working for Panaka successfullyconfiscated[29] Skaak Tipper weapons crates andraided theSkaak Tipper Hideout, preventing the criminals to steal all bank terminals inKaadara.[32] The spacer later joined the RSF under the orders ofGregar Typho. Together, theyeliminated the warlord known as theMauler Usurper,[7]captured the criminalDoogal Belstar,[33]assaulted theMauler Stronghold,[8] anddefeated the Naboo pirates in space.[10][34]

The same year, the city of Theed was victim of aterrorist attack. RSF agents commanded byMajorFranchels,SergeantBrunser,LieutenantDunnels and SergeantBragg identified the Mummers as responsible and thenraided theMummer bunker to eliminate the terrorist leaders.[35][9][36][37] Around the same time, the RSFrescuedKarl Eckener, kidnapped by the Darkwalkers.[38] A short time later, LieutenantSundria Khartoor caught the criminalHunnos Jarkey.[39]

Later, in4 ABY, a coalition of remaining Naboo loyalists and theGungan Grand Army were able to openlydefy the Empire and liberate Theed.[40] However, the celebrations didn't last long, as the local Imperial garrisons put down the insurrection.[41]

  31. Theopening crawl ofStar Wars Galaxies:An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events ofStar Wars: Episode IVA New Hope, and additionally,Serji-X Arrogantus, whodied inStar Wars (1977) 10—the events of whichThe New Essential Chronology dates to0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion ofStar Wars Galaxies must be set in thatyear. Furthermore, in the gameRuwan Tokai references thedestruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, andStrongholds of Resistance also places the events ofGalaxies'Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in1 ABY. Lastly, whileChapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features theBattle of Hoth—dated to3 ABY byThe New Essential Chronology—the developers havestated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events ofStar Wars Galaxies must span from 0ABY to around 1 ABY.
