Aparticle shield was a type ofdeflector shield that could repel solid objects.[1] It was used onImmobilizer 418 cruisers in conjunction withray shields.[2]
Description[]
Particle shields were generated from aparticle shield projector, forming an invisible field that would start mere molecules from thehull and extend to envelop the entire ship. They were commonly used on both civilian andmilitarystarships as their primary protection againstmicro-meteroids[3] and other solid space debris[1] that, although tiny in size, could easily penetrate hull plating due to the extreme speeds required forinterstellar travel. As particle shields would deflect all solid objects regardless of direction of travel, they had to be carefully calibrated to drop for fractions of a second at a time whenever aprojectile weapon (such as aproton torpedo) was fired, anescape pod or other auxiliary craft was launched, or the occupants simply wished to exit their ship viaairlock.[3]
History[]
During theImperial Era, starship owners had to apply for a special permit before acquiring some particularly powerful particle shield projector models to ensure theImperial Navy maintained weapons superiority over civilian craft.[3]
