"Who will I be the next time around?"
―Omi's final thought[1]

Omi was aForce-sensitivedianoga who lived insidegarbage masher 3263827 aboard theDeath Star.

Description[]

Omi, like otherdianoga, was asentient[1]carnivorous[4]cephalopod[6] which possessed multiplehearts,[1] seven suckeredtentacles, and a singleeyestalk protruding from the center of her body.[6] She had purple skin that could change color to match her surroundings,[1] and a green eye with red sclera.[5] Omi was 10.0meters tall.[4]

History[]

"There's something alive in here."
―Luke Skywalker[5]

Sometime before theBattle of Yavin, Omi got into an altercation withIduna, amale member of herspecies, who had wanted to exchangeeggs. HerForce-sensitivity enabled her to defeat Iduna.[1]

Sometime later, she was captured on herhomeworld by the nativeVodran, who handed Omi toImperials en route to theDeath Star. While en route to the DS-1 OrbitalBattle Station, she received avision offiery destruction and escaped her containment. She attempted to flee thevessel by making use of her species' natural ability to camouflage, but was discovered by two Imperialstormtroopers. Although she dispatched the two stormtroopers, by surrendering herself to the power of what she could only describe as "It," she realized that there was nowhere to go, and retreated back into her containment, until finally arriving on the Death Star. Once aboard, Omi once again received a vision offire, and was dumped into agarbage chute, introducing her togarbage masher 3263827, where she would feed on the organic materials that would fall in.[1]

AfterrescuingPrincessLeia Organa aboard theDeathStar,Han Solo,Chewbacca, andLuke Skywalker were temporarily stranded[5] inside garbage masher 3263827,[7] in theyear0 BBY.[2] Enacting the belief of her people, Omi pulled Skywalker into thewater, "baptizing" him, after she felt that he too was in "submission to It," and letting him go shortly thereafter.[1] As the compression cycle was about to start, the dianoga disappeared deep underwater.[5] When Luke Skywalker escaped the trash compactor unharmed, Omi sensed that he would go on to do great things.[1]

Before the Death Star's destruction, Omi continued to develop in her submission to "It," being able totelepathically lift objects into the air. When her vision was fulfilled, and the Death Star was destroyed, she pondered what she would be in the next life.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Omi, and the dianogaspecies, first appeared in the original1977 filmStar Wars: Episode IVA New Hope, the first installment of theStar Warsoriginal trilogy.[5]Nnedi Okorafor, writer of the short story "The Baptist" for the anthologyFrom a Certain Point of View, revealed Omi's name in a preview for her short story onSeptember 16,2017.[8] Okorafor stated that she named the dianoga Omi, as Omi means "water" in theYoruba language.[9]

InGeorge Lucas' revised fourth draft ofA New Hope, Omi, or more specifically the dianoga, was referred as "Dia Nogu," in reference to the earlier drafts, in which the Jedi were called "Dai Nogas" or just "Dai." The early scripts of the film didn't always have Omi's presence nor the trash compactor scene. In the finished version of film, Lucas was reportedly less than impressed with the delivered dianoga effect, having envisioned something bigger and more ominous.[10]

In2015,Chuck Wendig, author of the novelAftermath, expressed interest in potentially writing stories aboutMalakili,Chief Chirpa, or Omi. However, he ultimately wrote about Malakili in his sequel novelAftermath: Life Debt.[11]
