Mattis Banz was ahumanmale who was a member ofJ-Squadron, a training group within theResistance against theFirst Order.Born on thefarmingplanet ofDurkteel^[1] around19 ABY,^[2] Banz grew up as an orphan, residing under the care of aPhirmist temple, where he heard tales of theRebellion thatoverthrew theGalactic Empire. During thistime, he developed a heroic personality, dreaming of becoming likeLuke Skywalker,Leia Organa, orAdmiralGial Ackbar, and he often helped younger orphans in need.^[1]

In33 ABY,^[2] Banz's actions were noticed by Resistance recruiterAntha Mont, and the orphan joined the Resistance, training to become apilot in a group ofcadets known as J-Squadron. Amonth after arriving at theResistance base onD'Qar, Banz and a few other members of J-Squadron caused an accident which could have resulted in thedeaths of severalstarfighter pilots. As a punishment, Admiral Ackbar sent them on ascavengingmission toVodran. However, while on Vodran, Banz and the group encounteredstormtroopers of the First Order and were taken captive.^[1]
