- "It just isn't fair. Oh, Biggs is right. I'm never gonna get out of here!"
- ―Luke Skywalker[2]
TheLars homestead, also known as theLars family moisture farm, theSkywalker homestead, or theSkywalker farm, was amoisture farm onTatooine owned and operated by theLars family. Shortly before theClone Wars,Cliegg Lars lived on the property with his second wife,Shmi Skywalker Lars, and sonOwen Lars. Shmi's son,Jedi KnightAnakin Skywalker, visited the farm and learned of his step-family before discovering that his mother had been captured and, ultimately, killed byTusken Raiders. After Skywalker fell to thedark side of the Force and helped destroy theJedi Order,Jedi MasterObi-Wan Kenobi took Anakin's son,Luke Skywalker, to the Lars homestead, where the boy was raised by Owen and his wife,Beru. Nearly two decades later, the farm was destroyed and Owen and Beru were killed byImperialstormtroopers, who were searching for thedroidsC-3PO andR2-D2.
Description[]

Layout of the farm.
The Lars Homestead[5] was one of severalmoisture farms that made up theGreat Chott salt flat community, situated at the southern extreme of theJundland Wastes on theOuter Rimdesertplanet,Tatooine. Located mostly underground and accessed through apourstoneentry dome, the homestead was a warren of interconnected rooms and vast storage areas. Being a moisture farm, there were multiplemoisture vaporators scattered around the property, many of themdecades old, capable of collecting water from Tatooine's dry air. Any water obtained was used either for consumption or to water the farm's marginally profitablehydroponic garden. The homestead was ringed by a rudimentary sensor perimeter ofweather monitors andmotion detectors, used to monitor weather conditions and detect incoming intruders, such as infamousTusken Raiders. To conserve power from the property's superchargedbio-converter power generator and smallfusion-cell generators, the compound was shut down after nightfall. The rooms making up the compound included a kitchen, dining room, refresher, storage room, power generator room, vehicle storage area, tech dome garage, and two living quarters. Several droids were used on the premises, including aWED 15 "Septoid 2" Treadwell toolkit droid, aKPR security droid, and a several hundred year oldEG-6 power droid.[3] The homestead also had aZephyr-G swoop[6] and severallandspeeders, including aV-35 Courier and anX-34 landspeeder.[2] Although they primary used a6-2Aug2 hunting rifle, Beru hid severalblasters; a sawed offBE-29 blaster rifle and aBE-09 blaster pistol in the homestead.[7]
History[]
Before the Clone Wars[]
In the waningyears of theGalactic Republic, moisture farmerCliegg Lars worked the moisture farm occupied by his family for generations.[8] Lars bequeathed the farm to hisson,Owen.[3] Shortly before the outbreak of theClone Wars, Cliegg boughtslaveShmi Skywalker from theToydarianjunk dealer,Watto, and freed her, proceeding tomarry her shortly after. Onemonth before theFirst Battle of Geonosis, Shmi was out gathering in the morning when she was kidnapped by a group of Tusken Raiders. In response, Cliegg assembled a rescue party, but of the thirty farmers that went out looking for her, only four returned alive, including Cliegg, who had lost his right leg during the rescue attempt. Believing Shmi to be dead and unwilling to risk any more lives, Lars abandoned the rescue.[6]

The funeral of Shmi Skywalker.
One month later, Shmi's son, theJediPadawanAnakin Skywalker, arrived at the moisture farm, having sensed her distress throughthe Force. After reuniting with his oldprotocol droid,C-3PO, Skywalker went to confront the residents of the homestead. Learning of what happened to hismother, Skywalker decided to search for her, despite Lars telling him to accept herdeath. Skywalker took aswoop bike and eventually found his mother injured in a Tusken Raider camp, where she died in his arms. The following morning, Skywalker brought Shmi's body back to the farm, where she wasburied and given afuneral.[6]
Age of the Empire[]
Burning homestead[]
- "There's nothing you could have done, Luke, had you been there. You'd have been killed, too, and the droids would be in the hands of the Empire."
- ―Obi-Wan Kenobi consoles Luke Skywalker after an attack on the moisture farm[2]

Reva attacks Owen and Beru
Three years later, the Galactic Republic wasreformed into theGalactic Empire, with Skywalker, now theSith LordDarth Vader, as its chief enforcer. To protect Skywalker's newly born son,Luke, Anakin's formermaster,Obi-Wan Kenobi, traveled to the Lars moisture farm and left him in the care of Owen and his wifeBeru.[9] In9 BBY,[10] the formerInquisitorReva Sevanderattacked the Lars Homestead to kill the young Luke but she repents this and spares his life.[7]

The burning homestead
In0 BBY, a group ofJawas arrived at the moisture farm in asandcrawler, where they sold Cliegg's old droid, C-3PO, to Owen, as well as theastromech droidR2-D2. Tasked with cleaning the droids, Skywalker went below the farm's tech-dome, where he discovered the astromech contained a recording made byPrincessLeia Organa, seeking help from his father's old master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. After nightfall, R2-D2 left the farm to go looking for Kenobi, which Skywalker discovered, and so the following morning he decided to search for him. After encountering Kenobi and learning that the Empire was searching for R2-D2 and C-3PO, Skywalker rushed back to the homestead, only to find it burned down and his aunt and uncle killed bystormtroopers. Having no reason to stay on Tatooine, Skywalker decided to go with Kenobi toAlderaan and learn to become a Jedi.[2]
Visited by Darth Vader[]
- "You came topunish someone…but unfortunately…there's no one left."
- ―ZED-6-7, to Darth Vader[11]

On two occasions, Darth Vader visited the Lars Homestead.
In the weeks following theBattle of Yavin, Darth Vader searched for theRebelpilot responsible for destroying theDeath Star. Discovering that thepilot was, in fact, his own son, Vader, accompanied byDoctorAphra, revisited the abandoned homestead and followed Skywalker's path. While assessing the remains of the farm, Aphra speculated that Skywalker would never have left Tatooine had his family not been killed.[12]
In3 ABY, immediately after theduel on Cloud City between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, Vader set out on a quest to find the people responsible for Skywalker's upbringing. Making his way with the assistance offorensics droidZED-6-7 to an Imperial garrison on Tatooine, the two set toward the Lars homestead after discovering its location through Imperial records. Analyzing the area, Vader begun seeing visions of his past, which aggravated him. The two then found out that the headstones belonging to the graves of Cliegg Lars and Shmi Skywalker were missing, to protect the young Luke, and that Owen's and Beru's bodies weren't with them. Upon discovering this, Vader was frustrated even further with more visions haunting him. The pair were then attacked by pirates, who took out thegarrison commander who was coming to warn them. Using the Force, Vader destroyed the attackers and headed toward the next clue.[11]

- Kay Vess: "What happened here? Seems extreme, even for bandits."
- Human homesteader: "Empire. They do this thing with dissidents. Drag them out and burn it all down."
- Kay Vess: "It looks like a moisture farm, not a hidden spy base."
- Twi'lek homesteader: "That's cause it was a moisture farm. But they crossed the Empire somehow."
- ―Kay Vess, a human homesteader and a Twi'lek homesteader[13]
Later that year, scoundrelKay Vess came upon the deserted homestead which at the time had been mostly caved in by sand. Seeing two scavengers inspecting the structure, Vess inquired if there was anything worth taking to which they responded that all valuables had already been looted. Vess mentioned that the damage to the structure seemed overboard for bandits. The two residents responded that the Empire was the one responsible, and assumed the Lars family must have crossed the Empire in some way and paid a price. Vess then searched the place and found a datapad detailing repair work that one of the Lars' wanted done onLuke Skywalker'sT-16 skyhopper toy. The message stated that Skywalker had outgrown the toy, but that the toy still had sentimental value because of the person who gifted it to them,[13] Kenobi.[7] Vess then found a grayscarf that hermerqaal companion,Nix, could use.[13]
Peace[]
- "There's been no one for so long. Who are you?"
"I'm Rey."
"Rey who?"
"Rey Skywalker." - ―A Tatooine elder and Rey, outside the Lars homestead[14]

Accompanied byBB-8, Rey Skywalker leaves the Lars moisture farm
In35 ABY, following theBattle of Exegol,Rey visited the now long-abandoned Lars Homestead and saw where Luke Skywalker, her Jedi Master, used to live before usingthe Force to bury therespectivelightsabers of Anakin Skywalker and Leia Organa as a sign of respect to theSkywalker family, who became extinct afterBen Solo sacrificed his life to save her own onExegol. Laid to rest alongside the body of Shmi Skywalker, the family was at last reunited, in bothphysical andcosmic realms ofthe Force. And she ignited herownlightsaber for the first time. Subsequently, when approached byan elderly woman passing through, Rey was asked her family name. Thespirits of Luke and Leia watched over the young Jedi, with Rey claiming the surname Skywalker in order to honor both her masters and thedyad which united her to Ben Solo.[15]
