Invasion of Scipio

Theinvasion of Scipio, otherwise known as theBattle of Scipio or theBanking Clan crisis, was a conflict that took place on theplanetScipio between theGalactic Republic and theConfederacy of Independent Systems during theClone Wars. Having helped uncover corruption in theInterGalactic Banking Clan,Rush Clovis was appointed as the new head of the bank, only to be coerced byCountDooku into raising interest rates for the Republic, at which point Separatist forces occupied Scipio to cement their position. The Republic responded with its own invasion, allowingSupreme ChancellorSheev Palpatine to strengthen the Republic economically.

Prelude[]

Following the appointment ofSenatorRush Clovis as head of theBanking Clan,^[1] theConfederacy of Independent Systems and theGalactic Republic met on Scipio to preside over Clovis's installation as the the new head of the Banking Clan. The Republic representative, Senator ofNabooPadmé Amidala was accompanied byClone CommanderThorn and agarrison of theCoruscant Guard'sdiplomatic service whilst the Confederate representative,Separatist Congress LeaderBec Lawise, was accompanied by severalcommando droids.^[3]

The battle[]

Clovis was then blackmailed byCountDooku to raise the interest rates on the Republic and not the Separatists. This allowed the Confederacy to take full control of the Banks. Commander Thorn and his garrison then came under attack byConfederate forces. Thorn informed Amidala of this asHyena-class Droid Fighter/Bombers destroyed his ships, including a dozenRepublic gunships and aConsular-class Armed Cruiser.^[3] Storming Scipio,^[5] SeparatistHMP droid gunships were deployed and unleashedB2-series super battle droids and more commando droids, who surrounded andkilled Thorn and his men. Amidala informedSupreme ChancellorSheev Palpatine and theJedi. Dooku then arrived and had Amidala taken hostage.^[3]

Amidala was brought before Dooku, and when she refused to join him, Dooku ordered her to be arrested. Amidala then grabbed ablaster and Lawise refused to arrest her, knowing theSeparatist Senate would not authorize her arrest. Dooku then forced Amidala to shoot Lawise.^[3]

TheGalactic Senate then voted to launch a counter-invasion. Dooku then left the planet and returned to the blockade when theRepublic fleet underJedi GeneralAnakin Skywalker arrived. There, the Confederate forces inspace abandoned their units on the planet and jumped tohyperspace. The501st Legion then wentplanet-side to fight theConfederate ground forces. After finishing off the last of the Confederate forces, Scipio was secured. General Skywalker then stormed intoClovis' office to rescue Amidala. A blast then hit the office and Clovis and Amidala were then thrown off the side of the ledge. Skywalker grabbed both Amidala and Clovis. However, Skywalker was unable to hold onto both of them leading Clovis to let go of Skywalker, falling to his death. Skywalker was able to pull Amidala up.^[3]

Aftermath[]

Following the battle, SenatorNix Card informed the Galactic Senate that theMuuns had chosen to cede control of the banks to theOffice of the Chancellor.^[3] As a result, Palpatine gained the financial means to build^[6] his plannedGalactic Empire.^[7]
